Jarryd Hayne, who is widely considered the best rugby player in the world, announced today that he would be quitting rugby in order to pursue a career in the NFL.

"It's always been a dream of mine to play in the NFL, and at my age, this is my one and only chance at having a crack at playing there," Hayne wrote.

"I'm so passionate about the challenge that lies ahead for me, not only as an athlete but more so as a person," Hayne said. "It's the hardest decision I have ever had to make in my life. I'm leaving my teammates, friends, and most importantly my family; but for me to grow as an athlete and a person I feel this is the right step to take."

At 6 ft. 2 in. and 220 lbs. Hayne would seem to project as either a linebacker or a running back, but at 26 years old he may not have enough time to learn the game like he would need. His best chance is at finding a role on special teams, where he could potentially step in right away as a punt returner or kick returner. His rugby background could make him doubly valuable as an emergency punter.

"I believe I have the speed, I'm a quick learner, I feel things out really quickly," he said. "I have no doubt it's going to be tough. Ultimately it's a 12-month plan, going over there and trying to make a train-on team. For me to do that I need to start preparing for that around January or February."

I'm not sure if he's immediately available and how that all works, but I wouldn't mind the Panthers taking a look at him for PR duties. Philly still scares me to death. I'm also sure he would immediately come in as a pretty sound tackler and could help in ST coverage once he learns the concepts, and could be worth trying to develop at LB or RB.

Before watching the video I was like "nah, rugby players don't often have the cutting or shiftiness for RB."  I lived in Australia for a while and watched plenty of it.  This guy seems like an exception though.  Worth a shot.  We coincidentally have a PR position that needs an upgrade....

Rugby league is a great sport to transition to football from, and this guy is bound to get some interest. He's basically laying his career out on the line here, and I hope he makes the most of it. Maybe this can get some Aussies more interested in football and vice versa.

    • Just another 1st round QB that never paid off for the team that drafted them or traded for them. It's been like this since the SB began. 36 QBs have now won the SB & only 13 of them have been 1st rounders winning with their original team. Namath 1968, Griese 1972, Bradshaw 1974, McMahon 1985, Simms 1986, Aikman 1992, Elway 1997, Roethlisberger 2005, P.Manning 2006, E.Manning 2007, Rodgers 2010, Flacco 2012, & Mahomes 2019. Only 3 have taken longer than 5 seasons as the starter to win a SB.  4  6  5  4  6  4  15  2  9  4  3  5  2 [the years it takes for these 1st round QBs] 5  1  4  1  3  1  1  2  3  4  [10 of the 36 have won a chip with their 1st team that haven't been drafted in the 1st round. These are the years it took them as a starter] What stands out? Only 2 of these QBs have lost their first championship appearance. Elway took 4 years as a 1st rounder & Hurts took 2 years as a 2nd rounder. Of the 10 non-1st round QBs, 2 are 2nd rounders, 3 are 3rd rounders, 5 are 6th rounders or later. Please stop wasting time on drafting 1st round QBs with such a high failure rate. The remaining 13 QBs are traded or free agent signings. Stafford, Favre, Young, Williams and Dawson are the 5 trades. Peyton Manning & Tom Brady also won for teams as free agents on a short stay as well as being drafted. The lesson here is don't waste your franchise on farming up 1st rounders for the league, and steer clear of trading for a franchise QB. Stick to finding that championship QB by drafting them outside of the 1st round or through free agency.
    • I lost most of the respect I had for Fox in 2010. He should have resigned if he hated the job that much. Instead he stuck for his paycheck and let stuff go to hell.    I burned out on Ron too but my deal breaker issue with him was away from football and after he was gone from the Panthers. He may have been out of his depth but never quit on us.
    • From where they were one year ago to now, pretty incredible. I mean, say what you want about Vrabel he is no Jerrod Mayo.
