QB Index: Cam Newton breaks into the top five

Cam is finally getting noticed for his QB play and his progression as an NFL QB.

This article from NFL.com: http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000000411707/article/qb-index-cam-newton-breaks-into-the-top-five

Newton's running ability adds enormous value, but it's his consistent throws that have impressed more this year. He no longer gets into funks for an entire half, and still brings the best fastball around. (Newton leads the league in throws that go too fast for the end zone angle camera operators.) Newton looks like the same quarterback every week, and that's the final step toward joining the best.

On to this week's quarterback rankings. These rankings are based on 2014 play only.

Top Shelf

1. Philip Rivers

2. Aaron Rodgers

3. Peyton Manning

4. Andrew Luck

5. Cam Newton

Just for FYI really.

@ Green Bay (A Rodgers)

vs Seattle (R Wilson; SB Champs)

vs New Orleans (D Brees; PrimeTime Game)

@ Philadelphia (PrimeTime)

If this team can get hot (& a little lucky) and play consistently over the next 4 weeks & somehow pull out 4 wins...

Cam Newton will be the clear front runner for MVP & the Camny Cam hype will be at an all-time high. He's proven he's elite & will play great, if the team can pull together around him it's gonna happen.

7-2-1 with 4 straight wins in big time games while he puts up big numbers & carries this team on his back? Unlikely? Yeah, very unlikely. But it could happen & ESPN would be slurping him 24/7.

Please tell me this is an official stat. Wish we could add another stat around "throws that physically push receivers into the end zone."

That's why I made it "bold".

I dunno if it's an 'official stat' being that doesn't really effect game play. BUT... I have said 9and I'm sure many others) that I think Cam's passes are the fastest in the league when it comes to straight line lasers.

This just seems to back it up a good bit... I mean, the camera guy can't keep an eye on the ball it's that fast. That's pretty good.

I completely agree that he throws the fastest in the NFL, maybe Kaep and Rothlisberger comes close but the old "fast arms" of Cutler, Stafford, Flacco just don't compare anymore.

There are times the speed effected Cam's accuracy in the last two years but I think he's worked on his technique in the OS and now hes able to ping fast+accurate balls as well as anyone. The only problem with it is the WRs often don't have time to react and grip as much as with some over QBs, which is why we've seen some balls bounce off of KB's hands in the last few weeks.

I agree as well. sometimes the balls just so fast and catches the guys a lil off guard or don't have the reaction time as the ball is already there.

But, more often than not that happens on the short passes. In which case, the go to Olsen... and Olsen is used to them.

As the guys get used to Cam's lightning fast passes I think more completions happen. And as cam trusts them more, the more "tight" passes might be made as the trust gets there.

Though, I do wish we had an Offense where our WR's would be running wide open in the passing game sometimes like I see with other teams... lil slants and there is no one to be found for 5-7 yards from the pass catcher.

But, I think that'll happen when we get a consistant Run game established again.

    • I feel the same way. Bryce hasn't proven himself to be so good that he would clearly lap anyone that we'd bring in the compete for the starting job. I think the team is actually afraid to do that. If Bryce goes down does anyone think Kenny Pickett is solid option to replace him?. We can control him for 2026 and 2027. The problem is 2028. Unless he takes a massive leap forward ability wise, I don't see how Carolina can justify paying B.Y. $50 million a year. So far, Bryce has not shown that he can CONSISTENTLY carry a team. He needs to be carried by a strong offensive line, running game, pass catchers and a respectable defense. If he's lacking any of those things I don't think we can make the playoffs in 2026/2027 unless the NFC South is as bad (or worse) than 2025. Unfortunately, athletes and agents have EGOs! When he has a chance for a 2nd contract his management team will probably insist on a "market deal" and feel insulted if they don't get one. That leaves a couple of options if his play hasn't significantly improved. 1) Let him walk and test the market. 2) Franchise him for the 2028 season if you're still not sure about what to do. 3) Extend him to a team friendly deal that pays him below the "current market" which would allow the team to continue to build a solid team to support him. 4) Over pay him and pretty much ruin any chance of becoming a consistent contender. The last option is the LEAST DESIRABLE ONE. The 2026 season is a pivotal season for Bryce and the Carolina Panthers. The success of the next 5-7 years could ultimately be decided on how well plays the next 2 seasons.
    • Thank god BigKat can't buy it because I'd be gone immediately
    • Drake Maye ended up putting almost 300 on them lol. Bryce was stunned from the beginning to end. I know that's an easy comp for the Bryce truthers but no one else put up those puny QB stats against them all season long.
