Clinton Portis on WFNZ yesterday....

Gettleman might have inadvertently lost Cam when he cut Smitty. Why? Steve Smith has received more media hype and attention at age 36 or whatever he is now in his one year as a Baltimore Raven than he did in any single year as a Panther. Baltimore has won multiple Super Bowls and gets way more media play than the Panthers do. Mike Mitchell is getting way more attention as a Steeler than he did as a Panther last year. The Panthers are the NFL's farm team. If you're Cam Newton and you have zero ties to Charlotte and North Carolina and you want to be an entertainer and icon, is staying with the Panthers the smartest thing to do?

Cam "failing" is the wrong language. If Gettleman doesn't believe that Cam is the guy he wants to build his team around, then why would he want to give him a long-term deal and pay? He wouldn't want to. Likewise, if Cam's bad offensive line gets him maimed, he'll have an excuse not to pay him.

The o-line hasn't been a priority. Beyond that, eveyone has the right to speculate whatever they want about why that is the case and not give "Dave" the benefit of the doubt on it.

Who should he have signed to make the line better?

no one has heard of the franchise tag- trust me there is NO WAY Cam leaves in free agency. If he is truly that unhappy with Carolina (which I don't think he is) we would trade him to the highest bidder- and there would be a ton of bidders

Kelvin Bejamin

That's 1 in 4 years.

I do like the Turner pick though as well. But here we are in Cam's 4th season and he's throwing to guys like Cotchery and Avant, both who are on their last legs. And he has an OL that's a complete mess. Bell, Chandler and Amini all suck, and no amount of practice is going to help.

I'll apologize in advance for bringing Luck into this but immediately the Colts draft Fleener for him. He also has young guys like TY Hilton and Moncrief that'll he'll grow with and develop solid chemistry with. All of this topped off with a great veteran WR in Reggie Wayne.

We've given Cam no one to grow with besides Benjamin and that was just this year. We gutted our WR group and got older in the process. That's going backwards imo. Guys like Bersin and Philly aren't weapons, they've been nice surprises given our current roster.

Everyone is a genius when they're pointing out everything they think GMan has done wrong. But not a single one of you can say what should have been done differently with respect to our available cap, FAs available, and drafting position.

I sure as hell wouldn't have drafted Morgan Moses, not knowing what we know now.

I have no problem with Gettleman's drafting philosophy or his cap management.  The things that have gone wrong are not things anyone could have foreseen.

I do disagree with signing off on Bell and Chandler at the tackles.  Although I think that was more Rivera than Gettleman (see the post above on Collins) gettleman still has to bear the ultimate blame for it.

All that said, the silver lining for this season is that we'll likely end up with higher draft picks than expected.

I find it humorous when you all pull that stupid trick out of your cap every time someone annoys you. I'm not the one.

Name every offensive lineman in every division of college football that could've been drafted last season, every lineman in the NFL that could've been obtained, every guy on the street that wanted to try out for an NFL team who could've played offensive lineman, and then I'll play your game.

Dave Gettleman's been GM for four years?

I don't know of any options that would have been better than what we thought we had in Bell or Chandler after we lost the chance at Collins.

Does anyone?

I was being serious. If you're strongly sure that the moves were incorrect then you have to know what the correct move was to back up your argument. If not then you don't have a very strong argument.

    • Yeah and I am doubtful he can offer that consistently. I don’t have many years left at my age and in my view we have wasted two and this whole exercise with him was always a three year minimum.  I am out on that with a guy I don’t believe in, and never believed in, it has sucked. To me it is a costly detour off the right track. Years.    But I am not so rigid that I can’t see excellence. He needs to display it though, consistently before I change my outlook.
    • No, when I said rage, I meant rage, which only applies to certain fans on this board. Your timeline of trying to assess whether he is the future or not is really tied to the discussions surrounding his second contract. If this team is going to commit to some monster contract while he has shown nothing but glimpses of brilliance would be deservedly worrisome, so the clock is genuinely ticking for him to settle into something resembling his final form. Perhaps a best case scenario is that he plays well, the team succeeds, but he does so with a more limited role that makes the rest of the league view him as a game manager, and his second contract value reflects that. Then he continues to improve and becomes a bargain comparatively while not handicapping the team around him, and we enter an era of consistent championship competitiveness that the fanbase has craved for decades and has never really experienced before. But that requires many, many things to go right and for Bryce himself to facilitate that if he ends up being the quarterback of the future.
    • Exactly. And the flame throwers as well, get location benefits from not going all out. But they have it in reserve.  Not sure how much Greg had but he was an artist.  There was a YouTube I came across last year or maybe even 2023 and I don’t how to even find now but it had two NFL QBs I want say one was Carr from the Raiders but I don’t really remember  The point of it is they stood side by side throwing identical distances to identical targets. Radar gun was used.  They threw the normal effort (not all out) and it was measured etc. Then they were asked to throw their ‘fastball’. They were missing and most often they were missing high. It demonstrated the same principle.    edit: and applying that to arm strength, give me the guy that doesn’t need max effort to have good velocity. The margins are so narrow with less velocity in tne NFL the defenders can Close on it and this is a league where they value down to the 100th of a second level. It is that tight
