2 plays that are simply baffling

I didn't see a specific thread made but for pete's sake...under a minute to go from our own 10-ish yard line, 1 time out:

Play action

Slip Screen (on 4th and 25...4th and 25)

What in the actual hell was that?  There is no excuse I deem credible by any means that could help me find reason in these play calls. I gave it some time after the game and am still pissed.

Considering this awesome conglomeration of JR, Rivera and DG, I don't see how they wouldn't be able to recognize that as completely asinine play calling.

Can anyone help me here?

How about the screen to Olsen on the third and nine in scoring distance? Or what about the the fact that Shula made our base offense the read option again going full Chud without the benefit of actually being able to score a touchdown?

It's all just so wrong.

your #1 pick just out jumped a ped taking loudmouth and one of the best safeties in the league for a big gain. i don't see any reason why on 4th and 25 you don't throw it up. the play call was an admission of defeat and the way the play was executed proves that sentiment

How about the QB draw that lost 8 yards and killed our opening drive (I think it was our opening drive). Or the HB dive right up the middle against a goaline package. Dude is a dumbass.

We were driving hard on them on run..play action, read option..then go empty in a bunch set with a QB draw...HORRIBLE!! And set the tone of just brain dead decisions in the red zone.

I don't understand why everyone thinks JR has his finger prints all over our play calling. JR doesn't live play to play likes fans. He's the big picture guy.

i would agree with you if all his coach hires weren't geared around defense first, grind it out, conservative ball control coaches. JR thinks he knows what it takes to win in the NFL and he hires people with the same vision. and they've mostly all sucked out loud

Exactly. This looked too similar to last years playoff game. We were able to move the ball pretty well and then implode when we get into the redzone. Actually, that is Shula's career in a nutshell. I wonder how many stinkers Shula has to put up to get canned for good.

Didn't mean it that way, just meshed together our top-3 decision makers in the franchise.  He's been border senile for a while so I understand he's not an in-game guy but he still watches the games.  I'm sure when he wants something done, it gets done.

We've only had 4 head coaches in the Franchise's history. 2 were defensive. 1 was offensive. Coach Ron was hired as a moderate. The offensive head coach was the darkest era in Panthers history. JR has reasons for not wanting that again.

Coach Ron said he would bring an attacking offense with aggressive play calling. He brought in Chud to run it. Ron sold himself to Marty and JR as defensive minded but forward thinking.

But Chud got cute, that is where Offensive minds always falter. Ron went for a guy he could control just like Fox did. And here we are.

There is this myth that we cut back on turnovers by going conservative. No, we haven't.

But back to the point. I think JR intended to hire a well balanced coach that wouldn't neglect the offense. It just hasn't worked out that way.

    • Yeah one big factor has been he is surprisingly quite durable. But the reality of that aspect is much of it boils down to plain dumb luck more often than not. Big guys get hurt smaller guys get hurt it happens across the league to anyone to varying degrees. The issue is we are staring down the barrel of a possible top 10 QB salary and Bryce Young is one of the least physically gifted starters in the league. That is not a shot at him it is simply a rational acknowledgment of circumstances. There is a legitimate question to be asked if his window as a starter in this league is smaller as a result because what is going to happen when those hits that he has previously popped right back up from with a smile on his face begin to accumulate as they do for every player that has been in this league? These are just things to consider.
    • This game is a must-win for both teams I feel. For the Canes, you don’t want to go back to Vegas and put them in front of their home crowd with a chance to close out the series. For Vegas, if you drop this game your only chance is to win 2 straight and similarly have to contend with an energized Canes home crowd if you get to a game 7.
