What would you have done?

it all starts with hardy. what happened was pretty much inevitable. very little that could have happened afterwards would have helped much unless you are talking the draft.

since you want names....i'll just say write all the names of available FA OTs on slips of paper, throw them in a hat and grab a handful and then bring them in AS COMPETITION to bell and chandler, which about all we could realistically have asked for or expected considering the small amount of money left after the tag. we needed to at least bring in experienced competition for the job with the understanding that we only had to pay for them if they stuck then we wpuld find a way to make it work. but we didn't do that. we didn't bring in any competition and i think it all comes back to one word...pride. stubborn bullheaded pride. gettleman and rivera were so confident in their ability to spot talent that they refused to bring in anyone just to prove they were right about bell and chandler. that's not a fact....that's just my perception.

the big picture is, though, that tagging hardy really handicapped this team and kept us from doing things that would have helped. that one mistake cost this team much more than letting him walk would have.

losing gross was probably the hardest loss for this team to absorb, but that was beyond our control because he had wanted to retire for a couple years and juat wanted to stop while he was still healthy and his kids were still young. it was foolish and blind for us to not see that coming and anticipate it. but there wasn't anything we could have done to stop it.

the hardy tag was something, though, that we could have not done. that was completely in our control. it was the snowball we created at the top of the hill and rolled down the hill that grew into the giant boulder of snow we see now. asking what could have been done to stop the snowball heading downhill so it didn't get too big is an interesting thing to ask, but the best answer will always be to not have created the snowball and roll it downhill to begin with. if you are going to look at solutions to a problem, look at the underlying problem and see what you could have done differently rather than the after effects of that initial mistake.

I agree with you 100% about the Hardy thing. We should not have franchised him.

Please, be honest and don't be condescending in your responses.

What would you have done this past offseason to prevent this from happening? What would you have done differently than what Gettleman did with the knowledge we had at the time. Who would you have signed, who would you have drafted, and what personnel moves would you have done that would make this team better than it is now?

I see everyone clamoring for Gettleman's head on a platter right now, but no one is providing any counter arguments to what he should have done differently. I'm seeing "he should have addressed the line" but when I ask with who, no one provides me with an answer. I'm not being condescending or patronizing, I honestly want to know what our other options were. Please be specific.

Go back to right after we franchised Hardy: Not knowing what we know now, what do you do with the Cap situation we are in? Who do we sign, who do we let go? How do we prevent this from happening?

First, not cut Smith since it's my opinion that LaFell and Ginn both left because he was cut.  Give him at least the option to make cap room first.

Second Try to keep at least 1 or 2 of the secondary.

Third still draft Benjamin to apprentice under Smith.

Fourth replace Shula.

lol to all the people saying they would have let Hardy walk

the Huddle would have been in flames if we had lost Hardy to free agency

Vegas has the over/under odds at 2 million threads having something to do with Peppers and him leaving

Allen Robinson over Ealy

Hurst or Henderson over Gaffney

No Roman Harper, his money goes to Eric Winston or Max Starks

Kept Godfrey at Safety

Kept 89

Eric Winston and Max Starks?  And Godfrey?  Oh hell no on all counts.

And given that Hardy is gone and Johnson looks awful, Ealy was actually a good choice.

2nd round draft Allen Robinson, Jarvis Landry, Monchief........one of these guys to stretch the field and replace ginn or take one of the OT available

Later rounds draft OT, either hurst or henderson

use later rounds to draft depth instead of signing backups as starters

resign Munnerlyn, the guy was underrated as far as his affect on this team, resign Mitchell self explanatory, guy was another player who played a huge role on this team, KEPT steve smith.......not even about to go into detail with that one.resign Hartsock went after ihedigbo instead of decoud put godfrey at backup safety instead of fuggin cb.......see how much it would cost to sign Terrel Thomas

treat my players with respect and handle my business like a true professional, showing you're fans you're trying to fix a glaring need goes a long way

    • In my opinion Fitterer was probably right about not paying McCaffrey. Now not wanting to "pay RBs" in my opinion isn't something you want to set in stone, to me it all comes down to the individual.
    • Maybe I'm just not understanding, but everywhere that I have read says that signing bonuses go against the cap prorated by as much as five years. The following example uses Andrew Luck's rookie contract as an example. "Take Andrew Luck, the first overall pick in the 2012 NFL draft. Luck signed a four-year contract with the Colts worth $22.1 million and included a $14.5 million signing bonus. Rather than a $14.5 million cap hit in 2012, the Colts spread out his signing bonus over the life of his contract. The hit against the cap would be $3.625 million per year over four years instead of a direct cap hit of $14.5 million directly in 2012. This gave the Colts more leverage and cap flexibility in signing other players." https://www.the33rdteam.com/nfl-signing-bonuses-explained/ I don't know why some of you think that signing bonuses aren't counted against the cap over the length of the contract, but whatever.   "The bonus with a signing is usually the most garish aspect of a rookie contract. Bonus is the immediate cash players receive when they ink a deal. It factors into the cap, but only for the whole contract duration, in terms of salary cap calculations. In the case of Bryce Young’s $24.6 million signing bonus, that’s prorated to approximately $6.15 million per season over a four-year deal. This format allows teams to handle the cap and provides rookies with some short-term fiscal stability, which is important given the high injury risk in this league." https://collegefootballnetwork.com/how-rookie-contracts-work-in-the-nfl/ I understand how signing bonuses can be a useful tool in order to manage the cap, and as one of the article suggests, signing bonuses may become important if you have a tight cap, but the bill is always going to come due. I'm not necessarily referring to you Tuka, but it seems to me that others simply don't want to understand that fact which is why they're reacting to what I'm saying negatively. How odd. In any event, I have a better general understanding of why signing bonuses are used now, and it's generally to fit salaries under the cap. Surely players, whether they be rookies or not, love a signing bonus because they get a good portion of their money up front. This in turn gives them more security and probably amounts to tax benefits as well. I also understand why teams would not want to use signing bonuses, particularly for players or draftees who have a higher probability of being gone before a contract even ends.
