The Future of our Offensive Line

best FA (NOT udfa) left tackle available and best RT in the draft.

vet LT might be pretty costly, but we need to take this poo more seriously.

Most LTs take a few years so people would have to expect growing pains over their if we fill it through the draft.

Bulaga or Parnell could be good for us at RT.

Essentially the 2003 approach with Steussie and Gross (hopefully minus all the false starts on the left).

How would you feel about flipping that script and getting a right tackle in free agency (cheaper) while using our top (potentially quite high) pick on a franchise left tackle?

i'm. hesitant to put us into any situation where a rookie is starting at any OT position. we are intoo dire straits to keep puttin ourselves into that situation where we depend on anrookie to protect our QB, but i know we might have to. i think that a rookie RT would be the safer route. the only way i could justify flip flopping that is if we picked up another LT stopgap to start in front of the guy we drafted and gradually worked the rookie in or made sure we had an established vet starting at LG. as it is, we'd end up with a very young sophomore at LG and a rookie at LT and i just dont feel safe doing that. in a few years i know it would be better, but we will be in win now next year. we have to be or we risk losing some vital components to this team and a lot of fans. we don't have the luxury of sitting around and risking the QB and while we wait for the blind side rookie to get off his roller skates and quit making stupid false start and holding penalties while he figures out how not to be abused and made to lookblike a fool by the vet DEs.

Would you still feel that way if we have a top five pick?

if the OT class next year is as good as it is believed to be, no. i would be quite fine with that.

i don't expect our draft pick to be that good, though, and as good as a talent scout as gettleman might be, i don't trust him with OTs.

People used to say the same thing about QB and WR, even DT. Takes time, etc., etc. Anyone we take in the top THREE rounds better be ready to contribute immediately!!!

Growing pains? Sure, but let it happen. Can't be worse. We started an UDFA rookie from Montreal in our "biggest" game of the year on national TV.

Btw the last first round OT we drafted, Otah, was a beast as a rookie.

Yes, and the last first round OT taken by the Panthers prior to Otah was a beast as a rookie too......Jordan Gross.

It's really a shame that Otah could not keep going.  He would probably be the LT right now, and a very good one.

Ogbuehi was switched back to RT because of injury to the other RT. they did the same thing to Matthews last year when Ogbuehi missed a couple of games. this draft class for OT is going to be pretty good actually with Ogbuehi, Scherff, Collins, Peat, Clemmings, Flowers, Stanley, Drango, Robinson, Thompson, Fisher, Sambrailo potential coming out.

think I read somewhere that Ogbuehi has had such a bad year at LT they've moved him to RT.

Ogbuehi has been replaced by LG Jarvis Harrison at the LT position for Texas A&M.because he cannot handle the speed rush is one of his primary flaws.i do not like this pick in the first and would be hesitant to pull the trigger in the second.

But if that was the strategy last year, it can't be the strategy next year. Just can't be.

I totally understand where you're coming from. But it would be even worse to tie up a 1st round pick or a lot of guaranteed FA money in a player who isn't going to get the job done either. It's a very tough spot to be in either way.

If there's not a tackle he feels good about when we pick in the 1st round this year, I think he should draft another position again. The one thing I think he should do differently in that scenario, though, is to take a couple chances on tackles in later rounds instead of drafting BPA.

Yep, even if OT wasn't a need, the chances of the BPA not being an OT for 7 rounds (plus unknown comp picks) again is very low. The fact that it is such a need and huge debacle make the odds less than zero that we don't address it.
