Mike Shanahan

Mr. Scot

So a little while back, I talked about the notion of bringing a possibly-soon-to-be-former head coach with previous ties to Dave Gettleman into the front office in a personnel role () if Gettleman were to decide the front office needed some changes made.

Here's another possibility in that same vein.

Mike Shanahan is the coach that brought Gettleman his first experience as part of a Super Bowl winning organization.  Gettleman was a scout with the Broncos when Shanahan coached John Elway and the Broncos to their first Super Bowl victory.

Shanahan's most recent job was with the Redskins coaching suspected coach killer RG3.  At the time, Shanahan was not only the head coach, but held the title Vice President of Football Operations and had final say on personnel matters.

Shanahan's son Kyle and protege' Gary Kubiak are both expected to be hot head coaching candidates in 2015, with one or both conceivably interviewing for the Panthers job (assuming it comes open).  Dave Gettleman and Kubiak were colleagues for three years in Denver and he'd be acquainted with Kyle through his dad.

So how would you feel about having the elder Shanahan onboard in a front office type role?

Too much like Holmgren, imo: not honestly that great, overall, as a HC and given a promotion he didn't necessarily earn or excel in.

I was just wondering what he's up to these days, but, I wouldn't care for him in a role like that here.

Parcells is of course the obvious choice, but I have no idea who a younger, hungrier version of Parcells would be.

Like an assistant to DG?

Most likely options would be running the Pro Personnel department or in a newly created Player Personnel role overseeing both the College Scouting and Pro Personnel departments, similar to what he did in Washington.

(same options I suggested with Coughlin)

In that capacity, Shanahan could also serve as a head coaching resource to a new young coach (like say, his son).

And the teams record those 3 years he was there?

24-40.

Keep him far away from this franchise. We've had enough mediocrity and ineptitude.

I would love to hire Kyle Shanahan, and I assume that would involve Mike coming in as an offensive consultant.

Kyle Shanahan getting the head coaching job means, in all likelihood, some sort of role for his dad.

Gary Kubiak getting the job makes that possible too, but nowhere near as likely.

Don't insult Holmgren like that... :)

There are some people who had always said that Shanahan was overrated. After Washington, I tend to believe them.  I want people in Charlotte that at least I can fool myself into thinking that they know what they're doing.  Shanahan does not pass the test.

    • I'll say 6. I don't know that we learned a whole lot about this team during preseason that we didn't already know. We didn't play the starters enough to really get a feel for what to expect. We had one good drive against the Browns, one 3-and-out and two 3-and-outs against the Texans. That's an extremely small sample size across 3 games regardless of performance. My camp/preseason takeaways: Jalen Coker might be the best WR on this team and is certainly no worse than #2. Nic Scourton is going to be a good player for us. Possibly very good. Bobby Brown was our best free agent addition and will do more to help the defense than anyone. Jack Plummer isn't an NFL QB. Not even a practice squad guy. Having anyone other than Canales and Evero call plays was a really stupid and pointless idea. Our depth is largely non-existent, especially on defense. The three areas we actually DO have depth are on the OL, in the WR corp. and at RB. I can't fathom why Dan Morgan didn't do more to upgrade ILB during the offseason. We better hope Lathan Ransom steps up at FS because if he doesn't we have a massive hole there. For all the hype surrounding Sanders and Evans, Tommy Tremble is still the best TE on the roster. I'm only slightly less enthusiastic going into the regular season than I was a month ago. I think our starters on offense are solid and we should be pretty good there unless Bryce totally regresses. On defense, we're probably bottom 3rd in the league if 100% healthy and significantly worse than that if injuries become an issue. We badly need at least two of our rookies to become high-level players early (ideally one of the pass rushers + Ransom) and at least 2 of our free agent additions (ideally Moehrig + Bobby Brown) to be significant upgrades over last year. Call me pessimistically optimistic 😆
    • 2010 was worse. Not much worse but worse.
    • Lol since 2017 the Panthers are 47-85,    Also since 2017 the Giants are 40-91-1   Lol
