Falcons expected to fire Mike Smith

dimitroff is a bigger problem imo

i really hope the players hear this today and rally around their embattled coach for one day exactly

totally agree with all of that, but mike smith is defintely a problem.

mike smith = john fox.

decent coach, who is good for bringing together a dysfunctional team, but then very limited in creativity and growth potential. basically peaks early.

the falcons have gone as far as they can with smith and ryan. their best shot for going the distance was 2012 and they choked in the nfccg to the 49ers after almost choking the previous week against the seahawks. imo, that was as good as it was going to get. ryan is a good game manager and smith is a good conservative head coach who is effective when playing bad teams and/or uncreative teams....at home. ok, so good might be a stretch. he's average.

but yeah....like hurney, the gambles that dimitroff took on draft days cost that team big and they just haven't been able to recover. at least with hurney, in those moments he didn't piss away first round picks by trading them away he did well with them (first round picks...not really other rounds). dimitroff got them a short term fix with gonzo and a really good WR in julio, but aside from that he's done horribly. defense has always been pathetic and the OL and run game just keeps getting worse. his solutions at helpful positions seems to get formerly high profile guys who are essentially washed up (sjax for example). he's not effective in FA or with the draft.

all that said, i really hope that the falcons don't fire anyone.  let them keep the weakening status quo as long as possible.

Ryan is nowhere near a game manager. He's had multiple 4,000yd 20+ TD seasons. He's proven himself a more than capable QB. The Julio trade did not fug us over. Even after it, TD made multiple big moves to get good players in FA and the following drafts we had. We have talent, Smith just can't coach it. The only mistakes TD made imo was bringing in Jackson and Konz.. Everything else is fine. We have good players on the O-line and defense. They're just not being put in situations and schemes where they can succeed.

You guys have some of the worst defensive talent in the league. No joke.

Prime example of Smitty not knowing what to do with his players: Antone Smith.

Guy has crazy numbers, something around 11 or so TD's on 20 touches and averages 30 or so yards per touch. He's probably the second biggest TD threat on our team. The problem? He's been with us since 2009! Smith hasn't been getting him the ball until these past two years.

Mike Smith had success in ATL - more than they're accustomed to. There's nothing wrong with replacing a coach but you better be damn sure you find a better coach.

John Fox > Rivera so losing him was stupid. Sort of like Beuerlein being replaced with Weinke. Whether it's a player or coach, if you downgrade it is a failure.

As much as I hate the Falcons and Arthur Blank (Jerry Jones 2.0), the manner in which he orchestrated the post-Mike Vick era bringing in Dimitrof and Smith, drafting Ryan was all done right. It was decisive, it was quick and it yielded immediate positive results. While it may have taken a few years to rebuild the team after Vick's ridiculous contract, once they got there the team peaked, the coaching staff peaked and the Falcons never bothered to build a defense along the way.

It's not Mike Smith nearly as much as it's Dimitrof, but it is time to move on.

    • Refs 100% rig the game. Whether it’s bias or incompetence or some combination of both. The outcome is the same. Teams, players, coaches, all get cheated and potentially lose their jobs because of the refs idiot bullshit. The NFL is complicit in this because the refs have no consequences and nothing is fixed mid game. Therefore in that sense the games are rigged. You are not seeing the better team win.   Secondly the refs are indignant and don’t like being told then they are wrong and change the way they officiate off that. I don’t give a fug if someone is yelling in your face. You should have the integrity to call the game fair and justly. Enough is enough. They should be held accountable. They already stole a god damn Super Bowl from us and are about to derail the franchise with last weeks all you can eat cheapshot bullshit. Add insult to injury that it was against the poo infested gutter ball Saints winning off penalties. Priority #1 next season is destroying them in every way imaginable.
    • I’m not an nfl script theorist. But more of a “NFL controls momentum in key games and it works to their advantage 80% of the time theorist” and I think certain refs get certain games for certain reasons. I could be very wrong, but I think the NFL wants us and Tampa to drag out to Week 18 and I think they knew if we beat NO, it could be over this week. It’s more exciting to drag it out and let pivot back and forth.
    • You could be right about that. There's a chaos factor here and the money will be flowing towards the Bucs. The fact the Panthers have never won a game with Shawn Smith as the referee makes it an even more improbale scenario. Panthers haven't won a game as the favorite since early 2021.
