Official Panthers - Falcons Gameday Thread

With Steven Jackson out, how does that affect the falcons today? Hes no spring chicken so you know he prob helps more in the pass game than the run, due to atlanta being pass happy. Could it help our pass rush?

Interesting stat, didn't know that. Has Steven Jackson been playing?

"There are reasons to look at the Falcons with respect, despite their record. The patchwork offensive line has developed some chemistry and hasn't allowed a sack in the past two games."

When the Falcons and Panthers met back in November, Ryan was sacked twice and hit five times. However, Panthers stud defensive tackle Star Lotuleleimissed that game with an ankle injury, while top pass rusher Charles Johnson missed practice time leading into that game due to a family emergency. The Panthers also have reinstated defensive endFrank Alexander, who was suspended for violating the league's substance-abuse policy. In other words, the Falcons' line has a whole new challenge this time around. Right tackle Ryan Schraeder is going to have his hands full against Johnson, while rookie center James Stonemight have his toughest challenge of the season in a game in which he can't afford many mistakes.

Speaking of the line, if the guys up front are able to hold up, I expect Ryan to take more shots down the field. Such wasn't a case in the first meeting, as the Panthers forced Ryan into a short passing game. In fact, he only completed one pass down the field, and it was a 20-yard hookup with tight end Levine Toilolo. The Falcons have to spread the Panthers out, get the up-tempo going and take some shots with Julio Jones, when possible. When I asked Jones about not going down the field during the last matchup, he said, "I wouldn't say we weren't able to do it. I don't think we took those shots to do it. Everything is there. We have the playmakers on this team to go down the field and stretch the field vertically. Every game, it's a different matchup. They've got some guys on their team that have changed at their corner and safety positions. We've got a game plan in place, and we just have to go out there and execute." Jones has averaged 118.7 yards on receptions 15-plus yards down the field over the last three games

The Falcons can't sit there and pat themselves on the back for limiting the Steelers and Saints to 45 and 57 yards rushing, respectively, the last two games. Yes, they did a solid job stuffing Le'Veon Bell. Yes, they contained Mark Ingram. But on Sunday, not only do the Falcons have to contend with arguably the league's hottest rusher in Jonathan Stewart, they also have to deal with quarterback Cam Newton and the option -- and possibly DeAngelo Williams, who is listed as probable coming off a fractured right hand. Stewart has rushed for 437 yards over the last four games, which is more than any running back in the NFL in that span. Newton averaged 5.0 yards per carry, which is third best among quarterbacks behindRussell Wilson (7.5) and Colin Kaepernick (5.9). The Falcons have to show discipline and be sound with their tackling technique or it could be a long day. The Panthers have averaged 201.0 rushing yards in their last three games and won all three. It has helped set up Newton's play-action passes. He's completed 70 percent of his passes off play-action in the last two games, according to ESPN Stats & Information.
