Richard Sherman talks about Cam Newton

Mr. Scot

If he is the fans should raise holly hell about it. I see people knocking Bell and Shula, hoping they will be gone but very few saying that want the inept backup Panthers WR Bersin gone.

Teams don't listen to fans when it comes to roster decisions, nor should they.

That said, I'm one that believes Bersin won't be back next year.  And if he is, he won't be on returns.

I think he had his year as an NFL player, and actually did a lot of good (which everyone seems to have forgotten thanks to his special teams miscues) but his ceiling is as a fourth receiver, and those shuffle in and out on a regular basis.

Nice story, nice kid, but I doubt he'll be back.

Many fans tend to assume that the call is for the long ball in that situation.  Could it be that we have a deep option, and several shorter options and the QB decides who to throw it to?

Yeah I wish it was that simple. The Panthers sent three guys on vertical routes. That means we had 7 guys blocking. The Seahawks had a 3 man rush with two QB spies. Greg Olsen's linebacker might have not been a spy but effectively he was because Greg Olsen was blocking.

So it was 3 receivers vs 6 defensive backs. Cam thew to the guy in single coverage. Can't say I blame him.

I can't get over our 1st and 10 jumbo package where we drop back to pass and Bersin is the only WR on the field. Cam looks to Bersin, surprise! Bersin is jammed at the line. Cam looks to the right and the pass rush is in his face and on his back. We took an 8 yard loss in the jumbo package.

After getting stuffed on this play, we make him first option in the red zone. It's like Shula isn't paying attention or putting much thought into what he's calling.

I'm sure you've heard this, "big time players, make big time plays, in big time games"..... And we go to Bersin? Ugh!!

You may be right, I couldn't really tell.  But I know that Shula has been accused of that a lot this year, and I do wonder if its all on him.

Of course, if its Cam making the decision to throw the long ball, then I would still blame the OC some for not telling him to try to pick up the first more often.

IMO though, I think if we have second and short, that is the time to throw the long ball.  It seems we rarely do that though.

Philly Brown is a short, speedy receiver who had a step on Sherman. Cam instead of leading Brown decided (or by lack of ability) threw a jump ball. Threw a jump ball to his short speedy receiver who was being covered by an exceptionally tall corner.

Horrible play. Stupid play design if Bersin was the #1, stupid throw by Cam. That play shows the difference in the two teams.

I think he's a good guy and he has some good qualities as a football player but he doesn't have any elite traits. Sometimes with backups you want them to be really good at one thing rather than average at everything. I could even see Bersin fitting into a different offense with a different QB. The window to throw to him is just smaller because he's not as fast. Trufant ran him down in week 17, it was eye opening.

He's shown some of the surest hands on the team, so he could be useful as an occasional possession receiver.

But hey, using a possession receiver in the wrong role isn't exactly a new thing for this coaching staff, is it?

From what Bill Voth wrote Bersin got more snaps than expected because Philly Brown was really hurting. To me, the smart thing to do then is run the ball or different pass plays but Shula probably had the playbook stripped down to make it easier to signal in. It just wasn't good enough.
