My WVU pick for this year

So as you know I usually pick a WVU that I think will excel in the NFL and usually they fail.  But I will never give up hope that one will excel in NFL.  This year the easy pick would be Kevin White.  While I would love the Panthers to pick him he will be long gone in the first round before our pick.  My next player was going to be Karl Joseph but he decided to stay at WVU for his senior season.

So I had to go to my third option which might sound bad but he is a player the Panthers could use and he will be available in the 2nd or 3rd round.

So without further delay I give you Mario Alford Wide Receiver and Kick returner extordinare.

Important stats

5'9"

4.39 40 time.

65 rec 945 yards 11 tds

26 KR 743 yards 2 tds

eeeeehhh, no thanks.  Guys that size that really succeed are one in a thousand.  With a late late round pick, sure why not.  Not in the middle though, in my opinion.

edit: I don't pay any attention to pro day 40s at ALL.  The only use for the 40 at the combine is to compare guys in even conditions to others.  I don't care if a guy ran a 4.43 or a 4.48 for any reason but to differentiate from another guy in the same class.  And even then, some are more game fast than shorts fast.  Have more strength to carry the pads better than the smaller track guys.

On film Alford looks really fast.  He looks faster than White in pads.   He is still a project I will give you that he would be play mostly special teams his first few years.  But once he learns better technics and gets more experience he should be a sold 2 wr.   4-5 round I would like to see him pick but he isn't a must have.

White looks good this year.  I'll give that place they call a college that much credit for producing an NFL talent but I wouldn't touch a WVU prospect with a 39 1/2 ft pole.

Austin, Bailey, Sims, Clarke, Pacman, Geno, yuck.

I'll give you Irvin though.

Oh I agree WVU track record for quality NFL players is terrible. Although Bailey is coming along in STL.

    • I hate to burst anyones bubble but this guy played 188 total defensive snaps in three years but 802 special teams snaps. If we do kick the tires, it's probably gonna be for that latter part.
    • I do believe that Evero gets canned before the end of the season and Capers takes over the D. I think the stage is set for Evero to fall on the sword for a 4-7 win season.  Not saying it would be a set up but I do think if that transpires, the seat under DC might start getting pretty warm, rightly or wrongly. That's my read on Tepper. I am not at all excited nor am I dreading anything. I just have extremely low expectations so I am just waiting to see what this revision of the roster looks like.  I FEEL like we are better on paper than last season's team but I wouldn't be remotely shocked if we were as bad or worse. Again, I do think this is the 2nd worst roster in franchise history overall. What will really make me happy is for some of the big questions to finally be answered(Bryce, Ikey, Horn, etc). I would like to see a real expansion of our core player pool(basically just D. Brown currently). I want to see a couple of hits in free agency and a couple in the draft. If we accomplish those things, I have faith that we are at least moving in the right direction after many, many years doing the opposite.
    • Considering our depth. Certainly kick the tires.
