Panthers met with Miami OT Ereck Flowers

Seahawksdraftblog.com:

"Ereck Flowers performed poorly in drills but he’s a terrific drive blocker who plays with an edge. On tape you really see him finish blocks ... He gets a nice push at the LOS in the run game. He has experience playing both tackle spots, he has size (6-6, 324lbs) and enough foot speed to evolve into a ZBS tackle or guard.

Today’s sluggish display could cost Flowers a place in the top-25...He has 34 and a half inch arms. His official 5.31 forty time isn’t great, but it’s better than Ju’Wuan James’ last year (5.34) and he looked the part of an established NFL tackle in 2014."

I don't care one bit about 40 times for an OT.  Straight line speed simply doesn't matter for an offensive lineman.  What I want to see with an OT is that kick slide.  OTs are responsible for the width of the pocket.  They have to be able to get out and set that edge.  Drive is important for run blocking, but much less so for pass protection.  What I saw from Flowers in that kick slide drill is a guy that will get beat like a Bell by decent speed rushers.  He's just not quick enough there.  Maybe it's a technique thing that can be fixed and maybe it's not.  I'm not a coach so I don't know.  All I know is that guy would get eaten alive at LT as a rookie.

He moves a helluva lot better than Bell could ever dream of doing. Sure, Flowers needs to clean up his footwork, but his agility tests were all very good for an OT. The difference between him and Bell is that Flowers has the athletic ability to improve, Bell doesn't. He could be a flawless technician and he's still going to get beat like a drum by good edge rushers. He just can't move those feet fast enough.

I would hope for more than just a little better than Bell with our first pick.

Ereck Flowers had been mocked in the late first by many

(including me), but the more I watch, the more he looks like a

RT.

I have a problem with this type of crap.  It suggests that

*only LT is important

*playing RT is somehow a flaw

*RT's not worth a first rounder

and that seems kinda silly.  The greater need is at LT, absolutely, but being a competent tackle is being a competent tackle.  That would give us one player who's a definitive starter at OT, which is halfway there.

    • This is huge may not be a trap game but this plays a major part in what they want to do. If we can get some pressure on Sam we know what he does with pressure coming hit and heavy. Also we may be able to take the top off their defense a backup safety trying to stop TMac or Cooker over the top or forcing him to play the backend should allow us to run the ball somewhat effectively. Either they allow some runs or we take some shots and if Bryce and whoever can connect deep we’ll be in business for another big time win against a top notch opponent. Might not be a trap game but health travel game plans all play a major role in each weeks game plan and this week might be leaving our way. We’re missing some replaceable pieces they’re missing key anchors to the offense and defense major difference time to solidly ourselves at one of the top teams in the nfc tomorrow fellas buckle up.
    • Yes.  If I am not mistaken, we need to sign Coker to the ERFA tender and insist that XL spends his spring and summer at a WR camp and not Coon huntin on his four wheeler.  XL was raw when we picked him--which is why I wanted to go another direction--and we are seeing how raw.  He is basically learning a position.     The Panthers will make their move in 2026 to be an NFL powerhouse behind Bryce.  Bryce needs intelligent WRs who catch the ball.  That said, we need a solid #2 to challenge XL and make cutting him easy, if necessary.  A #2 WR (intented to be a #1 by now) with under 400 yards is embarrassing.   On offense, you have to ask, "Where can we get better?"  In my view, #2 WR, TE (although they are improving) and maybe C (again, if we re-sign Mays, he is trending up and at 26, entering his prime--I say stay with him and find competition later in the draft (not good for C).  OL depth maybe?  In other words, XL is a glaring weak spot.
