Bill Polian interview on WooFNZ

I personally am happy with the Panthers decisions so far but we need to see the plan come together in the draft. We need to see any glaring problems addressed after the draft.

When I look at our roster I see unrestricted free agency as offering us diminished returns. Can we upgrade? Yes. How much of an upgrade can we get and at what cost? Small to medium upgrades at a large cost are available.

I rather look forward to next off season than feel buyers remorse in September.

Anybody remember when he said he would take RG3 over Cam by a wide margin? Anybody remember when he couldn't build a dynasty around Payton in his prime?

well i mean he doesn't have a job right now

fiz posted something last year taking polian's drafts apart and making a pretty convincing case that he's actually a hack.  it was a pretty interesting read.

Bill Polian is a great GM don't kid yourself. "He only won one Super Bowl with Peyton" is a lame argument. They won so many divisions and playoff games, they just got beat by some other great organizations/Quarterbacks in the playoffs.

Polian needs to get his head out of his ass and actually watch Cam play. I have called him before on Late Hits and had a few words with him before on the topic and the moron couldn't even recall plays that weren't on a game recap.

Tell the Hall of Fame GM to get his head out of his ass. That's funny as hell.

I'll try to stay unbiased:

Bill has been the model average NFL GM since forever and has been with a certain in-crowd since the early 90s in the NFL so has always been safe for a job.  He's solid with talent evaluation, not great and has built a strong legacy.  People can cite the whole situation of him being "thrown out" by security at Ericsson back in the day but that was way overblown.

Chris and a certain group of west coast based scouts/coaches convinced him RG3 was the second coming and it caused a further rift between the fam and the drunk in Indy.  Having Chris groomed was the kicker for him IMO and it's what cause Irsay to actual do something with his team for once.  Brian is making a solid name for himself though as Ault's heir.  If Peyton had got injured a year early, my guess is that you'd probably be looking at Kaepernick in Indy.

Also, he actually likes Cam but has to find ways to back up his RG3 stance on the media front...no joke, he sometimes sits in 552 on game days if he happens to be in town.

If you listen to Polian quite a bit you know that he can be opinionated which sometimes clouds his judgement. But he does know football and is a fairly good judge of an organization and what it takes to build a good team. He was the GM for the only time that Buffalo has contended consistently for a super bowl. Then he went to Carolina where he was charged with building a contender right away. He took us to a win in the playoffs in only year 2. Then he went to Indy where he built them through the draft and did so very successfully. In each place he had different challenges and did them fairly well. He is far from a hack and anyone who thinks that is the case is just demonstrating how little they know about football and about Polian.

    • This 1000%.  Hey who wants to sign with the guy that couldn't even get his client the guaranteed contract of a 3rd round pick?  Lmao
    • I don't think it's any weird or unique clause, it's the offset language, same thing so many contract disputes are over. It just means that including it, if a player is cut and then signed by another team, the original team would be able to subtract how much they're getting paid by the new team from what they still owe him on their guaranteed money. For example, it's why Russell Wilson signed for the minimum last year with the Steelers as that was included in his Denver contract.  So if he signed with the Steelers for $1 million, he'd get $1 million less from the Broncos, if it was $2 million, he'd get $2 million less, basically he couldn't make any more money than he was already going to make, so you sign for the minimum to not take unnecessary cap room from your new team while giving extra cap room to your old one. The problem with trying to include it in rookie deals is that a team trying to include it, it says they think they don't really believe the player will make it 4 years with the team before they cut them.  And this usually comes up with one or two rookies in most seasons, the difference is it's usually handled much more quietly and not as public and ugly as this one. The other difference is that it's happening with the Bengals, which I believe I saw are one of the few (or only?) team that doesn't have protections for rookies in rookie and mini camps to be able to participate even if they haven't signed their contract yet.  The other teams have injury protections that allow them to still play, but the Bengals do not, which is also why this one is so public and ugly, as most the time this happens, the rookie is still participating in the rookie and subsequent mini camps, giving them more time to get the contract done before training camp when they'd then hold out.
