A Matthias Mock

This is probably my last mock before the draft.  Free agency is pretty much over with, and I'm not that impress with the guys we brought in.  I know we didn't have much money, but this is year two of dumpster diving.  I will say I like the Kurtis Coleman pick up.  With that, on to my mock......

1st Round Pick- Ereck Flowers

With guys like Oher and Martin being front runners as our starting OTs, and Remmers being somewhat of a question mark showing upside, I figure we need to add in a guy who isn't afraid to throw down.  Flowers by the way could be the best OT in this class, which didn't really turn out to be as good as I expected.  If you listen to "experts", just about all these tackles have problems they need to work on, but I know what I saw in the games I watched on Flowers.  Dude pretty much held his own in the games I watched.  I'm going to trust my eyes concerning his potential.

2nd Round Pick- Benardrick McKinney

We have to complete a line backer trio before Thomas Davis decides to hang it up.  Of course even though he's listed as an ILB, he played in a 3-4 defense.  So he has lined up close to the line and on the outside at times.  He's shown he has the speed to play OLB and he can get after the QB if his number is called on a blitz.  Definitely a guy I want on my defense.

3rd Round Pick- Eric Rowe

Physical corner who turned out to be a combine warrior in his spare time.  Usually when corners have that great of a combine workout, their draft stock will shoot through the roof.  I would say before the combine, Rowe was a 4-5th round prospect.  Now, he might be a mid-late 1st.  Yet if we can get him in the 3rd, I want him to become a bully at the nickel.  You can tell from his size, he would be a good fit on the outside, but he's quick enough to take on slot receivers.  Plus with his tough presence, he could almost be like a linebacker out there, taking on the running game.

4th Round Pick- Javorius Allen

I love his running style in relation to what we do with our own offense.  He seems like a finesse runner, which will be a change of pace with Stewart's physical style.  Would be a great one-two punch.  Hopefully Fozzy could stay on as a third back.  The NFL really needs to have 54 guys dressed to play every Sunday.  Why they only dress 40-something players is beyond me. (Especially since you're paying the guys who don't play)

5th Round Pick- Stefon Diggs

Talent wise, he's a top prospect to be sure.  That said, would be an excellent guy to work the slots for us.  Someone who can quickly get open for Cam, and he would have nothing to do but watch Diggs work with the ball in his hands.  Also has the speed to be an outside receiver.

As of right now, we don't know who our number 2 option at receiver will be for Cam.  Quite frankly, we may not need one. (Now my definition of a number two receiver is a guy that can take over the game on occasion, not just a guy that handy)  With Olsen being a threat, all KB has to do is develop his game as a jump ball guy.  He may not have deep speed, but if he can get down the field, Cam can simply toss one up for him to catch.  I see KBs potential as a taller Terrell Owens.  If he reaches that potential, Diggs would be a nightmare in the slot.

I believe he is Hardy 2.0, without the character questions.

Camp fodder.  Might be something, but was extremely disappointed with his play this past season.

Came out and ran a very slow 40-time.  His time would have been slow for linebackers much less for a defensive back, a pedestrian 4.81.  Yet I'll take here with our last pick.  Before the combine, I was excited about his physical play.

Looks good to me. However, it's looking more and more obvious that Gettleman is trying to avoid taking an OT in the first.

Please explain? Just because he brought 2 OTs means nothing just like how he brought in DBs and WR.Its just to put us in best position during the draft and competition for the best 52 man roster

Thanks for all the comments everyone.  Ah, I didn't know Hackett ran a better time at his pro day.  I wonder what was up with him at the combine.  I thought about adding another receiver after Diggs, but I felt like we have a good bit of receivers right now and perhaps it would be better to spend some draft picks at other positions.  Like I said, I hope KB and Olsen can light it up.  With a strong running game, we can role with one great receiver and a great TE.

    • With the exception of knowing our obvious needs and who we were talking to along the way, my question is this:  How did so many people start on this Jalon Walker frenzy?  I think this--everyone wants to have a voice, make a prediction.  Now with social media and 24 hour tv, networks, etc.  it is more like a middle school grapevine than it is a process where people actually dig for real evidence and reasons.  Speculative journalism is lazy, and since there are now 2,348.356 podcasters with basement studios blasting nonsense into our phones all day, I think they just cut and paste ideas.  Yes, coaches lie and mislead, but I don't think Morgan or Canales did.  You are only as reliable as your sources.  Was Morgan more deliberate this year?  I think he heard the gossip and decided to downplay WR.  He said, (paraphrasing) "We like our QB room.  We will probably add to it at some point."  Not a lie, but definitely downplaying things. I was convinced that we needed a blazer to keep safeties honest, but to be honest, I am not sure that we have the QB with the arm to keep safeties honest.  We have Coker who is 6'1", Theilen is 6'2", and Legette is 6'3" and now TMac is 6'4"+.  It seems size has more value than blazing deep speed.  If I had known they thought that, I might have gone with TMac all along--I thought he was not a good fit.  And if you look at the Panther guide and consider the talent they met with in the first round, there was only one offensive player--TMac. There was another quote that Morgan made that might have been a bit revealing or at least directive. (Paraphrasing) "We want players that were productive in college."  Well, TMac was very productive. In 2023 and in 2024, he averaged 108.8 yards per game.   He is also a great artist.  Drew this portrait of Bryce Young from memory: Many people spent 3 months absolutely confident that Jalon Walker would play edge here. We had a need at edge, but with Clowney, Wonnum, and Jones, were we OK if we drafted a second round Edge? Was Walker the answer?  Unlike Hunter, he is a versatile player who could be awesome in the right system, but if used as a pure edge, he is not a top 10 player.  I was convinced that we would sign Jalon and as much as I like the kid, I could not feel good about the pick.  Mykel Williams scared me.  Both might be great players, but I could not see it.  So was Scourton productive? He was as a Jr when he was standing.  When asked to be other things, he lost his edge (pun intended). In essence, I think we got the best pure edge when you take away the other things he was supposed to do.  Walker's productivity was based on his versatility--something he would lose as a pure edge--so we would not really be meeting needs at edge.  Scourton, on the other hand, is better when not asked to be versatile.  Princely had 10.5 sacks in the SEC.  It simply makes sense.
    • I think they will too. Renfrow will use this opportunity to get in shape and get paid for it. After he's cut he will probably get picked up by someone after preseason.
