A Question brought up from IGO's latest podcast?

WOW!!

Well then you and I totally disagree. I have been telling people since he was signed that he would make the team based on his versatility, real productivity when he got his opportunity, and his YAC. His 2013 season was not a fluke. Big, young, strong, nice route runner with good hands, and a great red zone threat. I don't see how he doesn't make it.

I think Boykin has a chance due to him being more help on special teams than the others.. The rest of this is a little hyperbole. . He isn't that good at any of that poo.

The proof is in the pudding. Look up his stats.

You can't deny that he is a big or strong receiver. You can't deny that his YAC is damned good, which is confirmed by stats. Now you can argue his route running isn't better than the other scrubs vying for a roster spot, but I'd beg to differ as even McCarthy and the OC noted how efficient he was, particularly at the top of the routes. You can also erroneously argue that he doesn't have good hands like Mr. Igo suggested when Boykin was signed, but that's just not true when you look at his overall percentage. He had a rough start to last season and list his job to a superior receiver, that's just it. He is not a super star by any stretch of the imagination, but he's better than probably every receiver on the team not named Benjamin and Cotchery, and his stats pretty much prove it for the one season that he basically played more than just a cameo appearance. Hell, I could argue that he is a younger and cheaper version of Cotchery.

Again, he's not special, but he has at least put up a respectable season as a WR3, which puts him ahead of the curve in my opinion, as that is probably the ceiling for everyone not named Benjamin.

Not arguing a lot of this... Just you're a little over the top with the confidence in his game..  It doesn't take much to be better than Bersin and Philly thoe...

Perhaps.  It's more of a curved grading scale in reference to our receiving corps than his league wide status in regards to other groups.  If he is our floor come the start of the season, or even the 4th guy on the totem pole, I would think that we'd be a lot better off than we were last season.  I want to double dip at the position very badly, in two out of the first 3 or 4 rounds (with Hardy or Montgomery in round 4). Then I can feel that we have a receiving corps that's not a step above a joke.

Brown's speed is definitely one of those Huddle myths that has little basis in reality. OSU really did him a solid.

it was based on our lack of speed in other receivers not on actually being fast.if we do not bring in faster players he will still be a "burner" for our team. it is a comparison to others on the team. this I think is the same situation we run into with our young O-linemen. compared to others on the team they are good but it remains to be seen how good they really are in comparison to the rest of the league.

I typically agree with you but this is just absolutely outrageous. His YAC for ONE YEAR (hardly enough to prove anything at all) was due to the Packers' system and an elite QB who threw perfect balls leading him. If McCarthy and the OC truly thought he was that efficient and it wasn't coach speak, then why did he get benched all of last year? He's not nearly better than Philly; that's an absurd suggestion. He's not even much better than Bersin and only has the edge because of ST play. How you can call Philly's ceiling a WR3 is beyond me. Every WR in this league can improve and keep improving and perfect route running alone (don't care about size/speed) could make any WR a WR2. If we don't draft a guy early or sign Jennings you watch and see when Philly wins the WR2 job and goes on to have over 800 yards and 8 TDs.

You call him outrageous for his opinion of a player while going way overboard on a 23rec. 296 yard 2 td season??

Really???

If Philly is the #2 WR going into the season than we got crushed by injuries or Gettelmen F'up the draft...

Philly is no better than a #4 wr on a good offense..

Boykin will almost certainly be cut. Logic also says all other things being equal you keep the 2nd year player in Brown over Cotchery. If you're serious about fielding a good team you really don't keep a guy who can't play just because he's a leader.
