ATLANTA FALCONS: The Falcons were thought to be considering a trade-up in the first round for Dante Fowler Jr. Instead, they stayed put and still managed to add a potentially disruptive pass rusher in Vic Beasley. They also did extremely well in the next two rounds by getting CB Jalen Collins in the second and RB Tevin Coleman in the third. Collins only made 10 starts at LSU but clearly is talented and could develop into an NFL standout. Coleman illustrates that it doesn’t take a first- or even a second-round choice to get a runner capable of stepping into the lineup and producing. Grade: A

CAROLINA PANTHERS: The Panthers made a debatable pick in the opening round by taking Shaq Thompson. There are questions as to whether he will be a safety or a linebacker in the NFL. If the Panthers project Thompson as a safety, they could have taken Landon Collins instead. They did get an interesting player in the second round in Devin Funchess but will have to figure out whether he will be a tight end or a wide receiver. Carolina lacked a third-round pick and probably needed to do more to maximize its early choices. The Panthers did make a fourth-round bid to address their ongoing issues on the offensive line by taking G Daryl Williams. But that might not have been enough in that area. Grade: C-

NEW ORLEANS SAINTS: This is a deep and interesting draft class for New Orleans. The Saints used their two first-rounders on T Andrus Peat and LB Stephone Anthony. They got the nation’s sack leader in the second round in LB Hau’oli Kikaha. Anthony, Kikaha and CB P.J. Williams, an excellent third-round value, all should help right away on defense while the Saints also added a potential quarterback of the future in the third round in Garrett Grayson. Remember, New Orleans had to trade away Jimmy Graham to get its second first-rounder. Even so, the Saints had an abundance of early picks and used them relatively well. Grade: B+

TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS: The Buccaneers surprised no one by using the top overall selection on QB Jameis Winston. Now they must cross their fingers and hope their confidence that he can avoid further significant off-field issues is justified. On the field, he is a pro-ready quarterback. The Buccaneers rightly addressed Winston’s offensive line soon after taking him. But there is room to wonder if they chose the right offensive tackle, in Donovan Smith, near the top of the second round and if C Ali Marpet will make a seamless transition to the NFL from Division III Hobart. Grade: B

1. Bucks because they are a unknown quantity. Basically an entirely different offense that may or may not be outstanding.

2. Panthers because we sured up what we needed to and I think other than LT we are in a great spot.

3. Falcons because they got better but we know this team and they look good on paper but fail in the spot light maybe Dan Quinn might change that we shall see.

4. Saints because they are in cap hell and on a down swing. So good picks or not it won't do much.

This is every year under Dave. Then when they do the whole redraft thing they have everyone taking our players in the 1st and 2nd round and us picking up some crappy player. Panthers never win with the media.

Because a majority of these mocks are based solely off needs with little regard for the skill of the prospect himself and the fit he has within the team's scheme, which was a major guide in how DG drafted this year and others.

Atlanta probably had the best, unfortunately.

I think the worst was New Orleans. They reached on both of their 1st rounders. Peat over Parker? Stephone Anthony over Malcom Brown or Eric Kendricks? They may have drafted solid players, but they could have had players with special attributes. They screwed up.

Tampa in time will show that they screwed up as well. I look at Winston and see a Jamarcus Russell/Ryan Leaf type. The kid is saying the right things now, but he clearly appears to me to have a screw loose.

Carolina had an interesting draft. Many of these players were drafted on potential. We really went boom or bust with the first two picks. They could end up having the best or the worst based on the two steep trades.

    • Just another 1st round QB that never paid off for the team that drafted them or traded for them. It's been like this since the SB began. 36 QBs have now won the SB & only 13 of them have been 1st rounders winning with their original team. Namath 1968, Griese 1972, Bradshaw 1974, McMahon 1985, Simms 1986, Aikman 1992, Elway 1997, Roethlisberger 2005, P.Manning 2006, E.Manning 2007, Rodgers 2010, Flacco 2012, & Mahomes 2019. Only 3 have taken longer than 5 seasons as the starter to win a SB.  4  6  5  4  6  4  15  2  9  4  3  5  2 [the years it takes for these 1st round QBs] 5  1  4  1  3  1  1  2  3  4  [10 of the 36 have won a chip with their 1st team that haven't been drafted in the 1st round. These are the years it took them as a starter] What stands out? Only 2 of these QBs have lost their first championship appearance. Elway took 4 years as a 1st rounder & Hurts took 2 years as a 2nd rounder. Of the 10 non-1st round QBs, 2 are 2nd rounders, 3 are 3rd rounders, 5 are 6th rounders or later. Please stop wasting time on drafting 1st round QBs with such a high failure rate. The remaining 13 QBs are traded or free agent signings. Stafford, Favre, Young, Williams and Dawson are the 5 trades. Peyton Manning & Tom Brady also won for teams as free agents on a short stay as well as being drafted. The lesson here is don't waste your franchise on farming up 1st rounders for the league, and steer clear of trading for a franchise QB. Stick to finding that championship QB by drafting them outside of the 1st round or through free agency.
    • I lost most of the respect I had for Fox in 2010. He should have resigned if he hated the job that much. Instead he stuck for his paycheck and let stuff go to hell.    I burned out on Ron too but my deal breaker issue with him was away from football and after he was gone from the Panthers. He may have been out of his depth but never quit on us.
    • From where they were one year ago to now, pretty incredible. I mean, say what you want about Vrabel he is no Jerrod Mayo.
