Just found a good read over at ''Black and Blue Review''

 

Pro Football Reference, one of the most helpful sites around for stat heads, tweeted an interesting chart they built on Monday. As Panthers quarterback Cam Newton was celebrating his 26th birthday, PFREF compared his numbers to what 34 other starting quarterbacks put up in their first four seasons. You can find a slimmer version of the table below, but first, some notes:

The entire first part is pretty misleading/irrelevant.... He has the fourth most games played.... And then they go on to talk about how he is really high up on these other QB's in terms of these other stats.... Well of course he is going to be high up there, he played more games!

The interesting part, is where he rates in the chart below.

Just that it seems like a strange group of guys to compare him to and then make a point about where he falls within that group (largely in the top 3rd). But the eclectic group of QBs include a guy from 1927, Dan Marino, and Josh Freeman. With that strange collection, I'm not sure what any of it means. Maybe I just can't get past the disparate grouping and it's just trying to point out his stats compared to a wide variety of players. I don't know.

Why did they choose those specific 34 QBs to compare him to? It seems like a random collection of QBs that kind of muddies the point.

 

Was thinking the same thing, some omissions from the list too, no Rivers, Romo, Brady, Brees? I mean, is there really any point comparing Cam to Namath, Kelly and Garcia? 

 

Nice thought, confusing execution.

I'm no NFL Historian or buff, but if I had to guess the list appears to  comprised of only ''STARTING ROOKIE QB's'' in their first four seasons. 

 

I think that is why we see such a varied list of players by comparison and that is why Brees, Rogers, Brady etc. are not included.

I'm guessing those 35 (Cam included) were the only qbs to start at least 50 games over their first four years?

 

 

 

For combined seasons, from 1920 to 2015, from 1st to 4th season, played QB, requiring Games Started >= 50,

No wonder David Carr got knocked out of the league.

208 sacks in 4 seasons... 43 more sacks than the next closest who is Jake Plummer and Cam is 4th highest.

That doesn't count all the near sacks, what the hell kinda line did the Texans give him for those kind of numbers for a non-running QB?

      Not sure how much he was a long term piece of this team.   Sucks to not have him as part of the rotation.   Looks like it's Lee Hunter time.

      I am not sure he will put the over the games but we’ll probably have them.   Two things I am thinking.  We have 4 preseason games.  All the coaches have enough service time to know the standards that are in place for decades. If I recall it was play your starters just a series to start woth and build it up until week theee where play a lot and you have week four to set hour roster. Evaluate before cuts.   Bevell will certainly have the whole thing down pat.   I’d they don’t do the fries and frie air will worry too. Because it is set up to do that.     I have said since they went t three preseason people have to figure a new way are still feeling it out and trying things.  We don’t have to this year.
