He's situational only not a great player but good at what he does puts some fear in your Harry on a third down pass rush

 

He's actually pretty good as a SAM LB in base D on 1st and 2nd downs. He and Beasley could be a formidable speed rush duo on 3rd downs. Good news is that he turns 28 this season so he doesn't have much prime left.

He was at the NBA game last night and said this:

“I’m going to be in Atlanta next season. I’m ready,” Irvin said to Black Sports Online. “Atlanta is where I want to be. Believe that.”

 

Semi on topic question here. There is something that I don't understand at all. Why do players want the 5th year option, but hate the franchise tag? They seem like the same thing, a one-year contract with no guarantees. The only difference to me is that the franchise tag generally pays a LOT more. 

 

What am I missing? For players still on their rookie contracts that are actually any good, it seems like you'd want to get to that coveted second contract as quickly as possible.

What did he have last year, like 6 sacks?? Big fuging deal...dude is a situational speed rusher, and that's basically it. If I was Seattle I'd say don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out.

 

I don't think you want to use sacks as the measure of a linebacker. Our own Keuchly has 6 sacks............ over his career.

Do players want that option? I would think you're right that players want the second contract as soon as possible. In this case, I think Irvin wants to play for Quinn but I don't know the inner workings of SEA.

 

But both the option and the tag are only 1 year contracts and leaves an opening for an injury that they would want to avoid. So I don't know. In the end, though, for NFL players I think it comes down to guaranteed money...since they can be cut whenever.

He's not though. He plays SAM in their base defense. He's regularly used as a blitzer and a pash rusher on 3rd downs but his primary role is that of a standard 4-3 OLB.

Irvin only plays well because of that Seattle defensive line and secondary. Which the secondary benefits from the pass rush up front, who else does Atlanta have ? Their lbers are decent but D line is absolute garbage.
