College Football Fans

I'm not much of a college football fan myself having gone to a small local school with no football program, but I recently had a conversation with a buddy who went to a larger school. My question was how does your view of a player change after you have die hard rooted for him for four years at the college level and then he is drafted by a rival team of your favorite professional team. This came up based on a conversation about Jameis Winston. My buddy is a die hard fsu fan and I questioned how he will view him when the panthers play the Bucs. Interested to hear anyone's take who has had this happen.

I'm a FSU fan as well, however, Jameis plays for one of three team I dislike with a passion. As soon as the Bucs took him, Jameis became part of the problem, trying to beat the Panthers, which has to be dealt with.

Personally, my feeling is I hope the players from my school do great in the NFL.

EXCEPT WHEN THEY PLAY THE PANTHERS.

Ideally, I would love to see the Auburn players on other teams do well at all times, even against the Panthers, as long as their team LOSES against the Panthers.

But it never hurts my feelings to see the players from the team that the Panthers are playing mess up, even if it is a former Auburn player.

In college football, I'm an Auburn fan (and alum) PERIOD.

In the NFL, I'm a Panthers fan PERIOD.

As a Miami fan, the players are spread out all over the place. I definitely want them to succeed just never at the expense of the Panthers. I was so excited when we had Olsen and Shockey. So much fun. But I'd like Gore and Johnson to do well over in Indy. And all the others.

I don't even mind if they play well against us...as long as they lose. Similarly it's the same way for fantasy players. While I won't ever get Brees or someone like that, if I have a fantasy player going against the Panthers, I want them to play well and lose.

Bottom line I always want the Panthers to win. Like when Moose went to Chicago I wanted him to play well. Smitty at the Ravens. Play well even against us but Panthers need the win. I was glad for Smitty that he had such a good game against us, just wanted us to get the W more. That game kinda hurt.

I wish the best for any player trying to make it but once they get drafted, collegiate alliances go out the window. I can't stand it when people will dog a pro player just because of the school he went to. I see it here a lot with the UNC, NC State hate.

I'm a UB alum & we don't have many in the NFL. Maybe, 1 or 2 starters. Starks in Green Bay & Mack in Oakland come to mind. They might not even be starting. So it's easy for me to forget about them when they play us lol. Otherwise I want them to do well. Over the years we've had a couple of UB players on our roster early like TE Chad Upshaw. That's when I get excited about UB players.

I have to admit, I'm more of a college football fan than an NFL fan.  I love football though, so I'm a huge fan of both.

Its just that, in the Deep Deep South, college football is king, and that's how I grew up.

Not only that, I grew up 25 miles away from Auburn.  AU was always in the papers and on the news where I grew up (Columbus GA). I even went to concerts in Auburn years before I ever even applied to attend there.

But I pay for NFL Sunday Ticket every year just to watch the Panthers too.  I have to admit, that's much cheaper than my Auburn season tickets.

    • Reasonable. I mean I didn’t see a clear path to relief this season myself. As I have typed already, I think the QB FA class is more interesting next season and that draft is supposed to be stacked as well. There just weren’t many options this year.  When you have Tepper to contend with you have to tread lightly around this unless you are 100% certain and willIng to stake your job on it.   There were a couple of outings that helped Bryce a lot in terms of  thinking maybe he can do this, and if you are a supporter you are giving them a lot of weight. You are likely to think just get him some more help and he can do that every week. Which I think Tepper falls into that category.  And the playoffs, division champs, regardless of the way I see that, the supporters will also give that a lot of weight.    And the big one, the atmosphere In BOA for that WC game, Tepper had to be soiling himself over that. If you pulled Bryce out right now you had better be right and your new guy had better make the playoffs and look good doing it or you will be gone and your chance to build your old team back into respectability will be gone too.  So here we have Pickett on a one year deal, and Grier and King. I understand it.
    • Well, seeing as we play the Lions at home this year, pretty sure that rumor isn't true.
    • Totally possible imo, I also caught that snippet from Morgan where he said “If” we sign him. The lack of competition says otherwise tho 🤷‍♂️
