Panthers, Pack, & the difference in reactions to the injury of a WR1

top dawg

Recommended Posts

The difference is 28 draft picks over the past 3 drafts for the Packers compared to 16 draft picks for the Panthers.

In the past 3 drafts, they have drafted the following offensive skill players: Ty Montgomery, Kennard Backman, Aaron Ripkowski, Davante Adams, Richard Rodgers, Jared Abbrederis, Jeff Janis, Eddie Lacy, and Kevin Dorsey. They also drafted and then had to cut Charles Johnson who is now a starting receiver for the Vikings. Meanwhile, they retained Randall Cobb and Jordy Nelson from previous drafts.

Aaron Rodgers has been able to work on developing the offense with all of them.

The Panthers have given Cam Newton the following offensive skill players over the past 3 drafts: Devin Funchess, Cameron Artis-Payne, and Kelvin Benjamin. Meanwhile, they passed on retaining Steve Smith and Brandon LaFell.

When one drafted receiver goes down and the other is a rookie with an injury, that leaves you with unproven udfas and journeymen at receiver. The Packers could have 3 of their receivers go down for the season and they are still okay.

This is what separates the GMs who know how to use the draft to build a contender and the GMs who leverage their future by throwing picks away in hopes of being a contender late in the season.

The Panthers will ride or die on young undrafted offensive skill players. Makes for a crazy season, but it will always be the reason the Panthers will struggle to defeat teams like the Packers, Seahawks, Patriots, and Steelers in the playoffs.

The Panthers could easily have a young stable of talented WRs if they used the draft properly over the past few drafts like the Packers and Steelers.

McCarthy is an offensive coach, so they put a premium on drafting offensive players. Not to mention they were able to land very good WRs in the 3rd rounds and later and they have a QB that extends plays in the pocket and makes his WRs better.

Ron is a defensive coach and we put a premium on defensive players in the draft. Haven't had much luck developing receivers the last 5-8 years.

abbrederis and janis have a combined career 2 rec for 16 yds between them

What are you trying to say?

That's what happens when the roster is loaded with talent. People with potential sit on the bench. The Packers obviously thought enough of them to invest in them. Hell, they cut Charles Johnson who proved himself to be a gamer in Minny. Just because a receiver is on the bench due to depth or injury hardly makes him a wash. They should get more opportunities this season to prove why the Packers acquired them.

The Gettleman cronie right on Q, and  blaming Hurney like always. Its like Bush and Obama no matter what Obama does Bush gets the blame.

2014 draft was a perfect example of Gettleman incompetence when it comes to drafting offense. Named the deepest wide receiver class ever, a team that let go of every single receiver on theirs roster PICKS ONE, just one. When everyone and there mother knew we needed 2 or 3. Stop with the excuses already

What I would give to see Martvis Bryant or Moncrief with Kelvin. Gettleman completely shat the bed

Sometimes I forget just just how incredibly poor your football knowledge is, but then you post something and I'm reminded.

I'm not going to bother trying to explain how BPA works to you. You've already shown you don't have the capacity to get it.

We're building for the long term, kid. Maybe by the time you grow up (assuming that actually happens) you'll see it.

Not at all. All I am saying is that I would have liked to have one of them. I would have particularly have loved Jeff Janis as he was the taller, more athletic, faster guy, and we could have made that happen had we not reached for an RB of all things.

to be clear though, we are talking about a rookie who has never played in a regular season NFL game right

edit: whoops, looks like he's played an entire season and has barely compiled a stat!  silly me

the guy was a 7th rounder from a division II school.  he's basically brenton bersin.  aren't we all supposedly furious with gettledouche for surrounding cam with late round scrubs and UDFAs from podunk U?  i mean if janis was seriously up for playing time in 2015 because of kelvin's injury i think this site would be as just as pissed off.

Lots of good points in this thread. I feel Gettleman has done a good job of building based on cams abilities and defficiencies. Tried to improve o line giving Cam the chance to be physical, while drafting receivers to cover Cams tendency to over throw. All while sticking to Carolinas strong Defensive philosophy.

Hate to say it, top dawg is a good dude, but his track record with no name WR's he's hitched his wagon to over the years is pretty bad.

They all are either medicore at best, or currently playing in the CFL.

i think it's getting a bit ridiculous to say gettleman doesn't know how to draft offense or doesn't care about that side of the ball.  big contracts were given to a quarterback and pro bowl tight end this offseason and high picks have been spent on wide receivers two drafts in a row.  the offensive line which everybody was freaking out about has been methodically rebuilt and is starting to look like a borderline strength.  everything on offense starts with the OL.  you are done if you can't protect the quarterback and it doesn't matter what the skill positions look like.

it boils down to people being mad that gettleman hasn't taken a spray and pray approach at a particular position group.

    • I've been hearing all about this "winning culture" for years while watching us piss away top shelf draft position with meaningless late season wins when we're already eliminated from the playoffs but being assured this is building "winning culture" just to inevitably suck again next year. With that said, I'll always take a playoff berth. Just make the dance and you have a chance to make some noise. But spare me the "winning culture" bullshit.
    • Winning culture trumps ALL.    Here’s my way to long take:  Last season this team started out breaking the sports books and being the lead pipe lock of the week. They finished by being a tough out for both SB teams.  I don’t think they’ll pick up right where they left off, but for the first time in years they’re on the legitimate upswing. Honest to God NFL talent has been infused.  Offense is already going to be good for 2-3 more 3rd down conversions (I don’t think anyone will argue that) a game over last year so I’ll go (very optimistically) 5-6 more points better than last year’s team. ADDED: A legit backup RB and a money WR who catches everything, along with 2 promising rooks. No significant losses (sorry Miles). KEYS: Can Dave bob and weave play calling if things aren’t working? Does protection continue to hold for Bryce. Did this team pick up dudes who know how to find the end zone or will the struggle of 3rd and goal continue.  Defense. If they can force even 2 (hopefully 3) more stops a game on third down (not asking a lot, hopefully more), that’s good for -4 (optimistic) points for opposing teams.  ADDED: legit run stuffers. Legit (appearing) edge guys. LOST: Clowney. Question: With legit 3-4 talent can Evero finally show what we have been VERY patiently waiting on? To me, EVERYTHING on defense hinges on Evero. Everything. Every position group was upgraded (still not good enough, but certainly improved).  Losing Brown early and Luvu… completely and utterly devastated the run defense. Luvu put up one of the best seasons at LB this team has ever seen. His under appreciation by some fans was criminal. He alone was our 3 down stop machine. Brown was pretty much it up front. Those 2 held RBs in check long enough for safety help to arrive.  Coaching: Halftime adjustments and no prevent defense. In a nutshell, that’s pretty much it. No cutesy offense to show off WRs/Bryce when it’s not working. Use your sledgehammers, Dave.  There is finally veteran leadership and legit NFL talent. It’s going in the right direction (I couldn’t have been more wrong last offseason) to build a winning culture, but teams have to learn how to win, especially the games where nothing is going right (this team has NEVER been able to do that). They will still lose more close games than they win, and that alone is where it all hinges.
    • With his current level of play I'm quite content to not activate his 5th year option and let him walk away for free after year 4.
