Deadspin hasn't yet release our Why Your Team Sucks yet but this is another entertainment sites job at a season preview.  Like with all entertainment sites that do this there is always a little truth in there that makes you think...

The Rivera stuff ain't too crazy to debate in your head...

Being a Panthers fan is like being in purgatory (as defined by the Urban Dictionary):

A place between Heaven and Hell, where the soul is not bad enough to be sent to an eternity of damnation in Hell, but not good enough to go to Heaven, so it is sent there temporarily where the person suffers, and is purified so that it can be sent to Heaven...

Funny how the whole division is so trashed sue to 1 or 2 down years.  A few years ago it was considered one of the toughest divisions in the league.  This year will likely be improved and in a few more could be one of the toughest again.

While everyone is debating whether Rivera is worth keeping or not, I will weigh in.  I know people trash the Panthers and our coaching for the poor starts but lets see what happens when we dont have wholesale fruitbasket turnover and are in cap hell this year.  Even with the injuries I am sure we will be better this year and will have better than a 2-2 record st the end of week 4. In my mind, Rivera and the coaching staff have done a great job with what they were given to work with.  MOst pundits think we will be in the bottom half of the division based on our talent.  Lets see what happens.  I think we will be better than expected once again.

I like Ron. He took over a team as a noob head coach during the perfect storm of questionable personnel moves and purging of contracts that resulted in losing. He has had to endure the transition of trying to rebuild the franchise at the expense of some difficult, if not questionable, personnel decisions which basically left him in a boat with arguably branches to use as paddles. Yet and still, he has worked with what he has and moved the team in the right direction. He has brought about a culture of winning and a never-say-die attitude.

It has always been some extraordinary happenstance that clouds the water with him though. Through no fought of his own, he has never had an even nearly full glass, and that's where Gettleman comes in. That's why I can't necessarily separate Ron's supposed failings to Gettleman's management.  Of course things are never going to be perfect, but sometimes wounds take a bigger bandage, and you just have to be prepared, or at least look like you're prepared if Murphy's Law makes itself apparent.  So, I am not going to make Rivera the fall guy for managing what he's had to deal with, while giving praise to Gettleman for what he has had to deal with.

The one place where I will solely fault Rivera, which may be a reason why he is eventually fired, is his unwillingness to make changes, Shula being the biggest. Ron sticks with the book entirely too long sometimes, as opposed to just being proactive and adjusting for improvement.  But again, overall I think that he has done a good job.
