The Maturation of Ron

London Loves Luke

Recommended Posts

The true test is going to see just how prepared he has this team after an extra week off. Bye weeks have been unkind to him his first 4 years to put it mildly. That must change. Now.

Ron's strength as a coach would be that he's able to get the most out of his players. From what we can tell the players will fight for Ron on the field and that speaks volumes. I'm sure most here have played for an idiot coach that just likes to yell and scream for the sake of it and you'd tune him out immediately. Ron seems to understand the communication part with the players very well and that's huge,

However, (to add on to your post) Game managing and planning don't seem to be a strength for Ron. He's 0-5 after a bye week (including playoffs) and that says a lot as well IMO. We've all witness many times in-game decisions back fire on Ron. Ron and his staff can make a HUGE statement by going into Seattle and coming out with a W. I believe we have the talent on this team to compete with anyone, it's up to the coaching staff to put it all together now.

Ron has def come a long way and you can see that.  I'd like to point out of a few other names that deserve some credit here!

Steve Wilks

Sean McDermott

Ken Dorsey

Ricky Proehl

I'm sure our other coaches put in work to make our team a complete product but these guys have had an enormous impact on the players that have had an enormous impact on our record.  I'd be very sad to see any of these guys go!

We are talking about the same RR who has kept Shula, who is not a very good OC, all these years.  His loyalty to some players/coaches has been one of his bigger weaknesses.

I agree with most of the praise above, and agree he is improving, but I'm going to need to see him do all of these things for an entire season, and not just half a season.

He kept Shula for exactly the reasons named.  He knew Cam would need consistency and instead of trying to learn different systems, become proficient in one system.  Cam's improvement from year to year is a direct result of playing in the same system and learning to master it.  Or you can have guys like Alex Smith who go from system to system and struggle.

His loyalty to his coaches and players is why guys like Jared Allen wanted to be here and why this franchise is considered a good place to land.  Shula is learning and developing as well. Rivera holding onto him is a recognization that the issue isnt playcalling so much as getting Cam to be a master of this offense and surrounding Cam with enough playmakerrs to run Shula's system. Funny that Cam is getting recognition for carrying the team despite a lack of talent yet Shula doesnt get the same recognition for developing plays that mazimize what Cam does best and developing the guys he is given into being the best they can be.  Otherwise why is Ginn doing so well in our system yet sucks elsewhere. Maybe Shula is doing a fairly good job at taking marginal players like Bersin and Ginn and making the most of them.  Instead of criticizing Ron and Shula we should be praising them for doing a lot with so little.

So if we arent good at gameplanning and making adjustments then why is the offense always better in the second half and why doesn our defense get better as the game progresses.

I can't say that Rivera is a great football mind, and it seems like he has a long way to go, but he's the first Carolina coach that I feel like is really a part of the team. Steve Smith used to be the heart and soul of this team. But when he was cut that had to shift and it didn't shift to Cam or Luke. It didn't even go to Davis (maybe some of it did). It went to Rivera. And having the coach be the heart of the team feels right. And I don't think that's the case on a lot of teams.

In any case, I'm glad we have him and that we have a team with integrity that comes prepared on Sunday.

Stopped reading at you cant say that Rivera is a great football mind.  If you can't see that Rivera is a very good coach who understand what it takes as a player and a coach then anything after that is wasted. He is considered one of the best defensive minds in the game.  And if you know defense inside and out you obviously have to know offenses as well or you wouldnt know how to limit opponent's opportunities,

Exactly.  If you are glad you have him then say so and stop qualifying with left handed remarks or criticisms like he isnt a great football mind.  Because he is which is why he won coach of the year in 2013.

I don't think everything has to be unqualified success or failure. Some things deserve a little qualification (I think Rivera does),  but you make a decent point.

His next step is to win after the bye.  He's not the greatest offensive mind, but hopefully he can turn the corner this year.

I just posted about this in the "Panthers can't buy a win after the bye" thread....

We've never taken a winning record into the bye week before under Ron/Cam.  (I'm discounting the Jan 2014 bye & playoff loss, because I think that's a different situation.  It was the first playoff game ever for the vast majority of our players...)   Also, in each case following the bye, we played teams with better records than ours, albeit none of the teams was above .500.   So, this year is a new situation.  We're going in with a winning record, and we will be the team with the better record when we play Seattle.   Hopefully that will be enough to help shatter this post-bye losing streak and kill this meme once and for all.

All these years? Ha..This is his third season..I understand that he hasnt produced a top rated offense...but you should also understand that its not easy getting rid of a coordinator who has taken his team to the playoffs every year that he has been in that position..

I have complained about Shula a ton, but I realize that he is not as bad as people make him out to be.  He gets almost no credit for when we play well and gets all the blame when we dont.   Cam has been given all the excuses... OLine is not good enough..Receivers are not good enough...All legitimate excuses..but it doesnt really get brought up when talking about Shula...When we are rolling on offense, we are very hard to stop.  its so easy for fans to say "just find someone else."  Be careful what you wish for..

Now you're making it sound like Rivera doesn't have your approval until he gets rid of Shula??  Seems harsh to me.. Look at all the circumstances.

As far as the loyalty thing goes..I've argued against that enough in the past already.  People who say that must not pay attention to our circumstances or other teams around the league.. We play more young guys than almost anyone.
