7-0 PATRIOTS

Hard to figure these guys rolling the way they are. Two quick theories (among 165) on thePatriots' dominance:

1) There's been continuity at the top, from ownership to Bill Belichick to the staff down to the quarterback. Too often, organizations move on from head coaches too soon, which means successful coordinators don't stay in place, either.

2) Rob Gronkowski's unique career. For all the talk of the 2007 Patriots having Randy Moss whilethis team's best wideout is Julian Edelman, bear in mind that Gronk is more unique than Moss was. Gronk doesn't take plays off, he can block, and he plays outside or inside. He's the big, goofy, focused queen on the chessboard.

7-0 BRONCOS

Love Vernon Davis. His addition via trade Monday was the sole reason for Denver's leap in the Power Rankings. Or not. Rather, the dominant showing from Wade Phillips' defense vaults this team into the top two. The Broncos authored what many would call a statement win Sunday night. And the statement was this: Our defense isn't merely good, it's the best in the league, while our offense and its quarterback can move the ball on anyone. Perhaps Peyton Manning and Gary Kubiak were simply working out the kinks in September and October. Large kinks, but still. Doesn't really matter if Denver is 7-0, huh? Everyone is circling Nov. 29 -- Patriots at Broncos on Sunday night -- on the schedule. Wonder if the thin Mile High air affects the inflation level of footballs.

7-0 BENGALS

The Bengals are 7-0 and seen as different in the eyes of the masses right now. This organization boasts the most talented roster in the NFL and certainly deserves to be atop the AFC North. But to be clear, Cincinnati didn't look too hot Sunday. The Steelers lost Le'Veon Bell to his season-ending injury early, while Ben Roethlisberger was playing his first game after missing well over a month with a knee injury of his own. The key is that the Bengals' defense was able to hold down the fort late in a game that saw the offense largely stink up the joint (especially on third down). On another note, Andy Dalton's shaved-side updo deserves way more respect. Is that Clipper 1?

7-0 PANTHERS

Well that got interesting, huh? The Colts' furious comeback should take nothing away from Carolina's 11 straight regular-season wins. Sure, the lack of a pass rush is a concern, and Ted Ginn Jr.'s hands aren't too comforting, either ... but at least one can be corrected.

The D came up big in the extra period, with Luke Kuechly catching Roman Harper's rebound and essentially sending us all to bed peacefully.

that is interesting in ESPN they still rank us below green bay who isn't undefeated anymore.

Hmm I'm not really that pissed off though , only thing that really matters to me is that we end up being the top seed in NFC and I want to get to the NFC Championship game. Don't get stuck on all these rankings..

I appreciate this. It shows that the only reason we're even at the top is because we're undefeated. I would venture to say that even if we were the only undefeated team in the league. We still wouldn't be ranked #1....

And thats fine with us. #keeppounding

The thing that bothers me about Clayton, besides his scary head, is the fact that he uses the NFC South's schedule as a way to demean our division.

Clayton: "It's still pretty clear the schedule is helping out teams that are in the NFC South".

Strength of schedule is actually a relative stat and I think it's more accurate the further you go into the season as opposed to using SoS based off last seasons results.  I could have sworn I saw some stat's regarding schedule strength that actually put us right there with all the other undefeated teams, except New England who has actually had a tougher schedule based on results this season.

I remember seeing a chart of the undefeateds last week. all of them had really weak schedules, with the panthers being in the middle. also, the AFCS was worse than the NFCS. that argument is weak, low hanging fruit.

ESPN changed their power ranking since I first saw it this morning.  The previous edition had us and the 2-loss Cardinals tied for 5th place with the Cardinals listed ahead of us.

    • In May of 2026, it looks like a challenging schedule...and it probably is.  I rarely listen to the "strength of schedule" conversations that light up social media this time of year. Each year teams improve and decline. I think there's chunks of the year we need to take care of business and the week 5 bye is not desired.  I do think if we don't hit the bye week at 3-1, it's going to be a major uphill battle given the schedule in front of us. This season falls on three people, regardless of schedule strength: Canales, Bryce, Evero.  Canales: Finally can truly coach all aspects of the team and not focus with gameday prep for OC duties anymore. He drives the bus and needs to get these guys in position to win each week. There's no way vets come in and put it on the line every week to watch our QB sh!t the bed (See: SF game last year). Bryce: Despite everyone's obsession with thinking Bryce is a guaranteed extension, I think this year will truly be his "prove it" year. If he comes out the way he has the past three years, I really don't see how vets and coaches can continue to put him under center long-term. He might play out that fifth year as the starter, but I think next offseason his long-term replacement is found. I also think there's no excuses with the weapons and commitment we've made on offense to insulate him with every possible weapon.  Evero: Best personnel he's had since he's been here...no excuses. Figure out how to blitz effectively. Figure out how to use CBs whose strengths are press/man. Figure out how to utilize a talented front-7 to get the hell of the field. Outside of FS and maybe....maybe ILB, there are few weaknesses on this unit.
    • Canales can never get his teams ready in the first week of the season so far. Hope that changes or Ben Johnson is going to take his azz to school.
