Wes Horton's roster spot?

I've been surprised not to see anyone discussing the question of whose roster spot Finnegan will fill long-term assuming he proves a good signing and stays with the team through the end of the season.  Obviously right now we had a free spot due to Wes Horton's suspension and the release of Aiken the emergency long snapper...

But I believe Wes Horton only has two more games of suspension.  It's basically his spot that Finnegan is filling...  When Wes's suspension ends do you all think we'll release him?

Obviously, if Tillman's injury is serious, he could be IRed (let's hope not!)

Other options?

Certainly we don't have to worry about this for two weeks, but it's a slow team news day, apart from Finnegan's signing, and I'm curious to know what y'all think.

If finnegan pans out we will IR Horton to keep from making that decision.

If we IR a healthy player, they can file a grievance to receive a settlement/ be released.  Teams would often do that back in the pre-free agency days (a la Joe Gibbs Redskins) to stash players they didn't have room for on the active roster but didn't want to lose.

If you are Wes "I've been cut already" Horton would you make a stink about getting IR'd?

Maybe not, especially this late in the season, but the Players Association might cause a stink if there was no documented injury.

I would totally be onboard for the Panthers doing this, I'm just pointing out there could be reasons why they couldn't do it under the current rules.

I get it, at this point in the season no one is "healthy" turf toe can flare up overnight.  Or swelling in a joint, or concussion-like symptoms etc etc etc.

Yes, I think we just had to release two healthy players from our IR  (Richie Brockel and Davonte Wallace).  Somewhere I think I read that they had to be released because they didn't meet the at least 6 weeks injured criteria, but I could be misinformed.

Amini went on IR with torn ACL and Big Money took that roster spot.

Horton got suspended after the Racial Slurs game and the extra long snapper took that spot.

Extra long snapper got cut and CB Finnegan was signed today and took that spot.

We're at 53 now, and Horton comes off suspension after the vaGiants game. If a DE gets hurt these next 3 games, we'll keep Horton around. If not, he'll be cut again.

    • I don't necessarily think he will be moved, I would currently be leaning against that notion. I think a lot will depend on the coaching situation. Carroll certainly can't be thinking about wanting to go through a serious strip down and overhaul, so the longer he plans to remain, the less likely I think Crosby gets moved.
    • I think everyone says Mike Evans because of size, but really they have different strengths and play styles.  Tmac is better on intermediate routes and not nearly as good at contested catches.
    • At this point, it is criminal to go into the 2026 training camp/OTA's with XL penciled in as a #2 WR. The team must upgrade, either through free agency or the draft. If he cannot give 100% effort on significantly less snaps as a #4-6 WR(players like Tremayne have done that consistently) then I don't think you have a player worth rostering beyond the trade deadline. Offensively, we eventually have to upgrade to an NFL starting caliber C. It's been almost the length of time from Gross to Ikey since Kalil retired and we have below average to terrible C play. Love Mays as a BC-esque utility backup but he will never be an above average long term starting C.  The TE room is one of the worst in the NFL but it's a low usage position in this offense, so the investments are likely to be small, if any. I would never expect to see an elite TE in a Dave Canales offense. 100% agree on OL depth. We actually aren't bad there but BC will be gone, Mays is a UFA, Corbett is a UFA and Zavala has been both injured and bad. We have to bolster that depth again or resign guys like Mays and Corbett to keep that depth somewhat stable.
