Remmers

So I'm on cloud 9 and the anti-OBJ wagon like the rest of the board...and I also hate to be negative after a win but Remmers has really been frustrating these past 4-5 games or so.  He's consistently getting penalized, pushed off balance by both speed and power rushers, and just seems to have taken a step back.  Now he came out of nowhere last year and I don't expect him to be the best RT in the league, but think we're starting to see why he's an awesome utility/swiss army knife lineman but not the future at right tackle.  He still has great chunks of these games however where he plays very well.  He's just getting kind of Steussie on me right now.

I'd rather keep him in moving forward because this line has chemistry and is in good shape...but outside of our lack of pass rush and some other minor things, this is becoming a pretty apparent issue that's clearly not just one bad game by him.

Am I looking too much into this or has anyone else noticed?

We've scored at least 30 pts for 5 weeks straight and never below 20 all season. I think we'll be alright with Remmers.

Oh I agree hence why I wrote my OP like I did.  Just something to keep an eye on.

If your point is Remmers is playing average or below average. I agree. But I would argue he is consistently average or below average. I think some fans expect perfection because of our record. We see witch hunts for our "liabilities" on a weekly basis. But our weakest links are part of the strongest chain in the league. Bene got criticized a ton and as far as I'm concerned his only crime was not being Josh.

Our line is not that elite. Jonathan Stewart could break 6 tackles for a 2 yard gain and everyone would talk about how great our running game is. What we do have is a collection of guys that Cam trusts and he can make plays because they are consistent. We run a scheme that allows guys like Andrew Norwell to play at a high level. He's not a Pro Bowler on most teams. Michael Oher is not a reliable player on most teams. Mike Remmers couldn't make a team before he got to us. It is definitely something to keep an eye on in the playoffs.  Teams like the Cardinals and Seahawks have the talent to exploit our offensive line's lack of athleticism.

I like Remmers, he's a good RT and useful in that he can work basically anywhere on the line. However the penalties could be trimmed a bit, and he has been getting beat more than usual, but it's not always his fault. Sometimes there are miscommunications on the line, someone doesn't help when they were supposed to, and I think teams have learned to avoid Oher plus our interior O-Line is the best in the league. Opposing defenses like to match their best DE on Remmers because they perceive him as the weak link. I think it's more of an issue that the line as a whole is playing SO WELL that when he makes a mistake or gets targeted by the opposing D-Line, it sticks out because our pampered 14-0 asses are spoiled due to 14-0ness and all it entails. I do think that Daryl Williams should get a shot at RT in the next two weeks during garbage time after we've, for all intents and purposes, already won the game. He was great in camp and I think it would be healthy for him to get some game time chemistry with the rest of the line during time when it doesn't matter too much if he fugs up. What if, God forbid, Remmers were to get hurt in the playoffs? We would thank ourselves for giving Williams that game time experience. Hoping for health for ALL our players through the playoffs. Bene must be flipping out that he'll miss the Superb Owl.

I expect Darryl Williams to be manning that spot next year, but I wouldn't mess with the chemistry these guys have for the remainder of this season.

I think that's the only reason Williams isn't the starter now.  You don't want to mess up the chemistry you have when your on a roll like we have been all season.

    • I still think another QB is brought in Day 3. Grier is camp body level at this point.
    • We’re in a pickle. My best hope is we protect him and can run the ball vs most Ds and the WRs are healthy so he has every chance to not look like what he looked like in too many games last year.
    • I'm really not stressing about upgrading from Bryce. I'm frustrated with our inability (or refusal) to recognize overall bad QB performance and failure to seriously address the issue. QB is the most impactful position on the field, and we're not only settling for what we've been given to this point, but we've rewarded it with a fully guaranteed 5th year extension for a player that's never played 2 NFL franchise QB quality games back to back in 3 seasons. I can't understand how that's ok from a coach's or GM's viewpoint. Successful franchises don't do things like this. It just doesn't make sense.  We do not have a top half of the league QB right now. Since we don't have that player, we should be looking for him. Pickett isn't it. Grier isn't it. Bryce hasn't proven he is yet. Until you have that sure fire franchise QB, you keep looking. You're not consistently making the playoffs, a deep run, or a SB appearance without one.  What's the worst that could happen? We end up with 2 potential number 1 QBs? How horrible.
