McDermott interested in Eagles job; Might not be mutual

Sean McDermott hints at wanting Eagles job in radio interview

Quote

After coaching four straight top-10 defenses in Carolina, McDermott told the Charlotte Observer that since the Panthers have a first-round bye, he’s willing to talk to teams this week that might be interested in hiring him as their next head coach.

So it’s no surprise that the former Eagles defensive coordinator showed up Tuesday morning on 97.5 The Fanatic to speak to Anthony Gargano about the Eagles' coaching vacancy.

“I love the Philadelphia area, and quite honestly, it’s been tough to watch the last several years having grown up in the area and worked there for 12 years,” McDermott told Gargano, noting the Eagles’ fan base is genuine and the team’s facilities are second to none.

If calling a Philadelphia radio station during the first-round bye wasn't enough of an indication, McDermott did show some interest when Gargano asked directly if he'd like to come back to town and coach the Eagles.

“Let’s just say that at the present time, with any and all jobs, I’m going to defer to my agent. It’s a process, and I’m humbled and honored to be in that conversation, whether it’s with the Eagles or the other teams that are interested,” McDermott said. “I would just love to see the Eagles recapture that magic, and that’s probably the best I can say at this point.”

McDermott also talked about how fortunate he was to work alongside former Eagles defensive coordinator Jim Johnson.

Johnson "really taught me how to attack an offense and to attack an opposing quarterback, and how to formulate a game plan,” McDermott said. “Jim’s just been a huge influence on me professionally and in some ways personally.”

However, while loads of Eagle fans and media have been lobbying for McDermott, per multiple sources the Eagles themselves have not asked permission to interview McDermott; nor have they done much of anything to indicate that they're inclined to do so.

The rival New York Giants have thrown their hat in the ring, though.

Might be interesting to watch how things unfold if the Eagles spurn McDermott and he winds up coaching one of their biggest rivals.

Fukk it man, I'm done giving a shlt about McDerrmont.

If you want to go somewhere so bad, go ahead and leave now.  You can thank Coach RR for making you look good.

Seriously dude, go "enjoy" Philly and their fanbase please!

Because you turn into a bitchy Panthers fan when you're hungry.

Come on, mayne! Every coordinator wants a HC job. Just part of the bidness.

I get that the culturally acceptable thing to do is for everybody to go "aw you go Sean! I'm so proud of you!" but screw that.

Sean, Buddy. Listen up. You have a chance to complete one of the most dominating seasons in league history, and win the most prestigious of Super Bowls. Coordinators who do that get job offers, and they are way better opportunities than the Cleveland Browns.

The defense didn't look so good last time you spent the bye week campaigning. I'm sure you'd say they aren't connected, but why risk it? Why not spend that time charging your batteries for the many grueling hours of coaching youll be putting in the next few weeks?

Come on bro. You're a great coach. The offers will come. Focus up.

Guys I COMPLETELY understand that most coordinators want that HC job.  Completely understand that, trust me.

But when your team is the number one team in the NFL and your calling other teams sport radio stations (all while he is not even an official candidate and/or officially interviewing for that position), sorry but that's a FU to the Panthers.

Go back to RR's recent comments about his coordinators and interviews.  He asked for those conversations to happen privately behind closed doors.  This guy is calling into radio stations where he isn't even a freaking candidate for the position, and slurping up to the city!  If I played for him, I would lose respect for the guy, I sure as hell have as a fan.

My point is, there are ways to conduct yourself in business.  In my opinion, he can't get himself out of Carolina fast enough.  That's super damaging to ones reputation.

Ed Werder reported yesterday that the Eagles were indeed interested in scheduling an interview with him

First source I've seen on it.

They'd be smart to do so.  I know a lot of the fanbase would be excited to have him now that he's established himself.  Plus many of them would like to see the Eagles be defensively dominant again like they were under his mentor.

I would link the tweet, but Twitter's blocked at work -_-...you can probably find it if you check his timeline.

    • Just another 1st round QB that never paid off for the team that drafted them or traded for them. It's been like this since the SB began. 36 QBs have now won the SB & only 13 of them have been 1st rounders winning with their original team. Namath 1968, Griese 1972, Bradshaw 1974, McMahon 1985, Simms 1986, Aikman 1992, Elway 1997, Roethlisberger 2005, P.Manning 2006, E.Manning 2007, Rodgers 2010, Flacco 2012, & Mahomes 2019. Only 3 have taken longer than 5 seasons as the starter to win a SB.  4  6  5  4  6  4  15  2  9  4  3  5  2 [the years it takes for these 1st round QBs] 5  1  4  1  3  1  1  2  3  4  [10 of the 36 have won a chip with their 1st team that haven't been drafted in the 1st round. These are the years it took them as a starter] What stands out? Only 2 of these QBs have lost their first championship appearance. Elway took 4 years as a 1st rounder & Hurts took 2 years as a 2nd rounder. Of the 10 non-1st round QBs, 2 are 2nd rounders, 3 are 3rd rounders, 5 are 6th rounders or later. Please stop wasting time on drafting 1st round QBs with such a high failure rate. The remaining 13 QBs are traded or free agent signings. Stafford, Favre, Young, Williams and Dawson are the 5 trades. Peyton Manning & Tom Brady also won for teams as free agents on a short stay as well as being drafted. The lesson here is don't waste your franchise on farming up 1st rounders for the league, and steer clear of trading for a franchise QB. Stick to finding that championship QB by drafting them outside of the 1st round or through free agency.
    • I lost most of the respect I had for Fox in 2010. He should have resigned if he hated the job that much. Instead he stuck for his paycheck and let stuff go to hell.    I burned out on Ron too but my deal breaker issue with him was away from football and after he was gone from the Panthers. He may have been out of his depth but never quit on us.
    • From where they were one year ago to now, pretty incredible. I mean, say what you want about Vrabel he is no Jerrod Mayo.
