Well he has clauses in his contract that he can leave, when and if he wants.  The rumors were that he was looking to leave on his own, versus the team forcing him out; hence he could go where he wanted without the team having to received compensation in return.

thats only if there's an ownership change. same thing happened with the bills and doug marrone

To clarify, he has a "change of control" clause.  Meaning that if Tom Benson no longer owns/controls the team, Payton can leave.

He tested the waters and nobody other club is dumb enough to pay him more than the Saints are paying him.  Now it's all about saving face and claiming he never wanted to leave.  He's the highest paid coach in the league and had one winning season in the past 4 years AND he had Drew Brees at QB.  

On a side note, their defense was the worst unit ever by a long margin.  The Panthers have his number so I'm not concerned about him hanging around a few more seasons.

Heard the guys on ESPN talking about this, said he's under contract for 2 more years and Loomis won't let him go.
