Sean McDermott >>>>> Meeks

Before the legendary Jim Johnson passed we could have had an opportunity to get the prodigy of this defensive genius.... Instead we took a guy who coaches a philosophy that just does not work well in the NFL anymore. Instead of getting a guy who can dial up a blitz from any angle, we get a guy who rushes 4 lineman only to watch the opposing QB pick us apart like a dry booger. The Eagles romp not only showed the glaring deficiency on the field, it showed the catastrophic mistake of Fox picking another "yes man" as his coordinator and not the prodigy of a defensive genius.

Eagles Defensive rank after one game: #1

Panthers rank: #10

I think I will wait until we get an average before saying one is better than the other.

I agree.

28 of their points where handed to them. Starting point was on the 10 or less on 14 of those points. They had 1 drive over 75 yds for points.

An L is an L but the defense didn't play all that badly.

Go Panthers

But isn't it that very defense that forced those 6 turnovers, which in turn only bolsters their claim as being a top notch unit? I remember McDermott's name coming up on here back when we were looking for a DC and really hoping that he would land in Charlotte. There are only a few coaching trees in this league and a few base schemes, in which coaches then tweak it to their mindset. I'm not hating on Meeks after one week, but I am over the Seifert-esque bend-but-don't break defense that we've had. Jim Johnson was a defensive genius and, imo, the apple doesn't fall far from the tree.

The denfense actually played well Sunday. Not much they can do when the Eagles start in Panthers territory 4 times. They caused 2 TOs as well. Say what you will, but the defense was not the problem Sunday.

I think it is a bit difficult to say how "well" the defense played considering the cirumstances of the game. It was a blowout by the middle of the second qtr and the D had barely been on the field. The eagles for the most part in the second half didnt really have to do much since they were up 31-7. Top that all off our Defense still gave up 180+ yards rushing.

That all being said, I do think our D will be ok this season. I am a bit concerned though going into Atlanta with them having to stop Turner on the ground, and what a feel is a good passing offense with a Gonzalez now at TE.

Sean McDermott >>>>> Meeks

For this week, yes.

But what I saw out there is Jim Johnson's system minus Johnson's wisdom and restraint. It worked against us as much as anything because we were unprepared. A smart OC who watches that tape may find ways to exploit that aggressiveness.

I'm not ready to anoint McDermott just yet.

I guess no one told you that any blitz based scheme does very well at the start of the regular season(as most them are not on tape due to being modified in the offseason). Add in the fact that hes a new D coordinator who's putting his own spin on JJ's blitz packages, and we don't make adjustments in game, its no wonder our o line was looking like a bunch of lost children out there.

    • https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/47371200/sources-rams-fire-special-teams-coordinator-chase-blackburn LOS ANGELES -- The Los Angeles Rams have fired special teams coordinator Chase Blackburn, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter. The move marks the first in-season coaching change that Rams head coach Sean McVay has made in his nine seasons in Los Angeles. Rams assistant special teams coach Ben Kotwica will take over and become the lead special teams coach, a source told Schefter. The Rams, 11-4 and second place in the NFC West, lost to the Seahawks on Thursday night in a game that included a Seattle punt return for a touchdown and a missed 48-yard field goal by Los Angeles kicker Harrison Mevis. The Seahawks (12-3) overtook the Rams for first place in the division and the top overall record in the NFC thanks to the 38-37 overtime victory. Though the Rams have lost only four games this season, three have involved special teams miscues. In the Rams' first loss of the season, 33-26 to the Eagles, Los Angeles had its final two offensive possessions end with blocked kicks. In the Rams' Week 10 victory over the Saints, kicker Joshua Karty missed an extra point and a 39-yard field goal attempt. After the game, McVay said the Rams' special teams issues "can't continue like this." Los Angeles replaced long-snapper Alex Ward with Jake McQuaide and Karty with Mevis, who had not missed a kick until Thursday night in Seattle. Blackburn, 42, was in his third season as the Rams' special teams coordinator. A former linebacker for the Giants and Panthers, he also has worked as an assistant with Carolina and Tennessee.
    • It was a bad play from Icky but the OL didn't give up a sack until late in the 4th quarter and Bryce just stood there like he was canatonic. If our 3rd year number one overall pick can't overcome one single sack against a rebuilding Saints team that should only have 2 wins this season then it isn't ever going to happen   This is your quote. I mean I’ve quoted it twice. It was followed by calling people that defended him fugers and several other meltdowns I can also quote.    Shame you for working for a living??? Wow this is a whole new level to your victim mentality thing you like to do. You don’t have to watch games live. Or don’t spend an entire thread arguing about something you didn’t get the full picture of. I miss parts of games all the time. That’s just life. Not even going into the whole losing all respect thing.
    • Rams ended up firing ST coach and former Panthers coach Chase Blackburn after the loss. Sounds all too familiar.
