Panthers won't talk Super Bowl

Voth: No Super Bowl Talk in Panthers Locker Room

Quote

It's almost like Super Bowl was a dirty term Wednesday in the Carolina Panthers' locker room.

For a team on the cusp of advancing to the biggest stage in American sports, the Panthers were quick to shoo away the possibility. That's because their head coach wants his players focused on one thing — Sunday night's date with the Cardinals — a game that just so happens to be for the NFC Championship.

"It wouldn't do me any good to talk about the next game if we don't get there," Ron Rivera said. "We understand this game is a big game. We understand this is an opportunity for us to move forward, but we've got to win, first."

Rivera has done a remarkable job this season getting his guys to buy into the 'one game at a time' mentality. The Panthers chugged through 14 straight wins while ignoring outside noise. It's clear Rivera's tasked them to keep those blinders on this week.

"I don’t even see the Super Bowl right now," tight end Ed Dickson said. "I see the Arizona Cardinals coming in our house to play us."

It's been mentioned before, but Ron Rivera has done a great job all season of keeping the team focused on the next game, not the game after that.

There was plenty of "trap game' chatter from fans early in the season, but it never happened.

And it looks like they're making a strong effort to make sure it doesn't happen now, either.

yeah the last thing you want is for players to be not focused enough on this game or feel pressure because of thinking about the possibility of being in the super bowl .

I hate the fact that media people would ask stupid poo like that probably multiple times too if they feel like pushing the question for a thorough answer. That just keep bringing it up in players mind even though they're trying their best to focus on this game.

Interestingly, the only game that truly ended up being a trap game was the one everyone in the media picked us to win... @ATL. I love how our guys talk about that loss, how bitter it was for them, driving them to stay focused.
