I thought this might come in handy for people driving to see the game.

Overview

Travel information is currently disseminated to the public using venues such as Highway Advisory Radio, Dynamic Message Signs, and on other NCDOT services. The North Carolina 511 system is part of a nationwide effort to disseminate travel information to the public via another venue, the telephone. 511 in North Carolina was implemented in the summer of 2004.

511 uses an automated voice response system, which means callers are guided through a menu with a series of requests. Callers can ask for specific areas, and the system will provide information about traffic incidents, closures and other important roadway conditions.

Background on 511

In July of 2000, the Federal Communications Commission assigned 511 for nationwide access to travel information services. 511 is an abbreviated dialing code for travelers to access highway, multi-modal, and other pertinent travel information via landline or wireless phones. By collecting travel information, NCDOT is able to disseminate information to the public, the users of the NCDOT highway system, to assist in the safe and efficient movement of people and goods. By giving the public access to travel information like construction, incidents, traffic, and transit, the public can make educated decisions about travel times, routes, and modes.

Types of Information Available

  • Traffic incidents and major closures on Interstates, US Routes, and State Routes in NC
  • Weather Conditions Statewide
  • Road Construction and Planned Road Construction on Interstates, US Routes and State Routes in NC
  • Amber Alerts
  • Links to Neighboring States’ 511 Phone Systems

Honestly the best thing out there is Google maps. They have the waze data for accidents and Google uses your GPS data as part of the TOS you agree to. The advantage to that is you get very good road speed data because of the number of people using it. It provides road speed data running in the background on peoples phones..

Or you know you could check Twitter like anyone under the age of 40 does

This is one big joke if you think you're going to get any relevant, timely info from NCDOT. Last year my daughter & family were stopped on I-40W coming into Statesville just past the last Mocksville exit. No idea why or how long they'd be stuck & no cameras on that desolate stretch. (I would've driven up to them on I-40E, picked up my toddler granddaughter & came back by Hwy 64.) No NCDOT tweet until I tweeted them to ask about it. Turned out to be a deer vs car crash with injuries & they were moving by the time I got an answer, almost an hour later.

Besides, if you're driving & trying to keep up with twitter, you'd be driving distracted & that's the last thing you want to do in bad conditions.

does anyone have contingency plans for travel if everything goes to poo? i'm trying to think of ways to make it down if 85 gets clogged with accidents... i guess if secondary roads are cleared that's a possibility

I often drive between Burlington & Statesville. I like to take I-85 to Charlotte but only as far as Salisbury, Jake Alexander Blvd. But then I can cut over to Statesville easily from there. Much past that on I-85 & you run into Charlotte traffic. If you get off at Salisbury you can take Hwy 150 to Mooresville then catch I-77 from there. I-77 may be slow but there are fewer accidents it seems. My only suggestion.

    • I know it's only been training camp and one preseason game, but I think T-Mac has already shown his floor to be exactly what I said about him in the pre-draft process. That his floor if he never improves his game, is as one of the best #2 WRs in the NFL, if not even still a low end #1 (i.e. a 25th-ish best WR in the league). I think it's safe to say he's already established himself as our #1, and there are only a small handful of teams in the league where I don't think he'd be their starting #2 WR in Week 1. Bengals (Higgins), Dolphins (Waddle), Eagles (Smith), Bucs (Godwin if healthy), Rams (Adams) are really the only teams where I think he'd be the #3 as a rookie in Week 1.  A few others like the Lions (Williams), Bears (Odunze), Seahawks (Kupp), Commanders (Deebo), where he'd be the 2b to start the season, just because they're vets and/or already have a year or two of experience with their team/QB. And even having said that, I think by year 2, he's better than every one of those players (And no, I'm not saying he's already going to be better than a prime version of Adams, just whatever he'll be at 33 next year), and same goes for Kupp, but that's more because it seems like his body might be quitting on him in a way that hasn't happened to Adams (yet).
    • Well to be fair, Horn not practicing right now to let his stitches heal up from a car accident isn't something that should be concerning.  Sure, you don't want him missing practice leading into the season, but it's one that once healed, won't have lingering affects or fear of re-injuring it, it was just bad luck.
    • Quality backups are absolutely important. This franchise has been plagued with depth problems. That said, there is a little bit of dismay that Mays can't beat out a 1-legged man, and all the talk going into the off-season was how BC would certainly be gone since he had position versatility.  In the end, it doesn't matter too awfully much, as I would be shocked to no end if Corbett makes it through the season. We know what we have in reserve, and that should surely be better than trying to sign random fat guys mid season to try and take over.
