The Panthers and screen plays.

Panthers can't run a screen or defend one.

With our backs there seems to great potential. And the opposing D having to think about screens could slow down the rush a bit.

But:

“A couple of those third-and-longs, I wish we'd run our patented draw instead of screens because that resulted in two touchdowns, one sack-fumble and one interception,” said Fox. “It's important not to get in those situations and when you do, sometimes bad things can happen if you're not careful.”

So, why doesn't Fox learn to execute a play that every other team seems to be able to do? (Not to mention defend it also). What is the problem?

By the way...didn't that comment sound like a dig on the fans?

This is one that really burns my ass. The current staff has made all sorts of lame excuses for why we don't run screens, like it's a difficult play that requires perfect timing. Boo f**king Hoo! This is a progressional team, dammit. Every other NFL team, most NCAA teams and even HS teams can run a screen play just fine. Yet the Panthers just make excuses. The finger is easy to point right at Mr Fox on this one.

Since the loss, this is the one thing that I've been thinking about more than any other. I watched a few other games after that one, and every quarterback was able to dump the ball off when the blitz came. True, maybe they didn't get blitzed as much as Delhomme, but at the same time the Eagles might have dialed back the blitz a bit if Delhomme could make them pay by tossing the ball to Smith, Williams, Stewart or Goodson, all of whom are dangerous in space.

It pained me to see JaMarcus Russell, a relatively inexperienced quarterback, doing this very same thing against the Chargers Monday night. Then, when Russell was injured and they brought Gradkowski in, he was completely screens against pressure as well.

I put most of the loss on Jake and the offensive line, but why can our coaching staff not adjust to things like this?

    • Pretty sure Tepper wanted BY regardless of the coach. Unfortunately for Panthers fans. I am confident Reich did not want BY.
    • But they went with a smile… and some acid reflux.
    • Prediction? We likely lose.  Maybe look okay doing it.  It could be different with some turnovers coming to us.   In general I don’t have the same faith in what we will get from Andy that I had in the week three games of the two previous years.   I was very confident as to what we would see last year vs the Raiders and was validated.  The patchwork OL worries me, in pass pro, with him being old and creaky and not exactly being ‘cat like’ in his escapability. And somewhat concerned about his arm strength. I mean in general, I think he could still be ‘as good once as he ever was’ which is a huge upgrade from Bryce.   But it is still another year of aging and at some point it’s over… people say it is for him, I haven’t seen enough of him this season to say otherwise.  Add the fact that they are generally a more seasoned and tested team than we are, players to staff. I am skeptical. But that is why they play the games, we don’t know for sure.
