Ryan Clark has a different POV on why Cam is hated.

I personally am not sure how anyone can hate that Cam has fun playing a children's game he gets paid to play, elevates those around him on and off the field, and helps those in the community through his time and money. Cam's awesome and even were he not on this team, I would still like the guy and what he represents.

That said, I'm not naive enough to think that there is no racism left today. I wish it weren't so, but truth is truth. Racism is a part of why Cam is hated, culture differences is another part. But I do want to point out that not all the folks who hate Cam happen to be "old white guys." I would hope folks don't want to become what they are now condemning...

I agree with you about Ryan Clark being blind on this issue, but my problem with him was that he danced around the issue and tried to sugarcoat it which was my point.

The hate that Cam Newton receives isn't ALL based on him being black, but a majority of it is and that's where Ryan Clark dropped the ball.

Exactly..Culture is the new media code word to state its other than racism...Again instead of people dealing with the racism directed at Cam to which Cam himself stated, Clark gives a pass/excuse to those who want to state its culture and not racism..but yet Keyshawn Johnson was let go who stated it was racism earlier in the season and ESPN now has their new PR guy to take his place..

You're exactly RIGHT!

Keyshawn Johnson actually stills works for ESPN on their countdown show.

Seems to me that 99.9% of the people who say "where I grew up race was no big deal" are white.

Can some people not like Cam because of his race?  Yes.

Some not like his culture? Yes

Some not like him because he doesn't play for their team? Yes

Because he has fun?  Yes

Because hw went to Auburn? Yes

SEC school?  Yes

Has better teeth?  Yes

More money? Yes

Since we play the what if game all the time many here who adore Cam would throw eggs at him if he played for the  Cowboys.

Even the sports culture has its nuances and biases and stupidity.

This just in. Humans can be amazing and dirt.  Sometimes in the same hour.

"Romo is a thug and ghetto trash" is not a critique I have seen much of toward Tony Romo

Ryan makes a good point, but it's just that, a point.  I'm certain he's correct in assessing that for some people it's cultural.  I think his error is in trying to box the Cam hate into one thing.  I feel confident in saying that for plenty of people (notice I didn't say white people), the color of Cam's skin is enough to set their opinion in a direction.  For others, the dancing, even if they understand the culture is enough to set their opinion in a negative direction.  Yet for even others, the college allegations, pay for play, laptops, what not set their opinion in a direction long before Cam became the discussion.  Different strokes for different folks.

However, those who choose to be enlightened see far more in Cam than has even become obvious yet.  He's kicking the barriers down, grinning, kissing kids, and winning a lot of football games in the process.  Now that Cam has the glaring spotlight pointed directly at him, he doesn't hesitate to discuss the elephant in the room.  That's using your platform to discuss something that needs attention, and it's the hallmark of a transcendent human being.  Cam has a message for everyone, particularly anyone who judges another human for any reason.

"Cam says he doesn't lose sleep over his critics because he checks himself short of judging others."

I'm ok with my son and daughters hearing this message.

Right.

So anytime the word thug is used its 100% racist or race driven and you can quantify that every time?

See the wind you are chasing here? No kidding racism still exists.  Water is wet.

But the consternation over some things without being able to validate other than hunches or anecdotal is energy not best used.

Somebody calls Cam a thug. Ok. Is that on air or in a bar or i  their home or in a car?

If publicly im pretty sure they will be challenged on it. If it's with like minded people then that's their problem.

Again. Not all non fan Cam's are racists.  I hope that doesn't burst some's bubble.

I apologize to all of my fellow Huddlers on here who happen to be of Italian descent. But, whenever I hear the term "thug," my first reaction is always to think of the bully boys from the Godfather, and by extension, Italian Mobsters. I'm sorry for that guys.

Damn Francis Ford Coppola for turning me into a slight bit of a racist !!!

I'm trying to overcome it... promise.

The Godfather was made years ago..

Thug is the new code word for N word used by white americans.. I'm telling you as an AA person that if you direct this at someone black then you basically calling that person the N word..If you use this word going forward after hearing what its new meaning is used for and harp the Godfather's excuse then you just part of the problem..Be about change instead..

It also has to do with the way Cam speaks and communicates off the field and in the lockerroom. It's easier for white people to identify with RW and RG3. And that's fair and a normal human reaction, I suppose. And coaches and GMs are dominated by white people. That is just reality.

i think a lot of the pre draft reports about Cam not being able to learn a pro playbook, not being able to effectively lead a lockerroom, galvanize teammates, ect.. Point to this notion. I remember Cam saying something along the lines of "I was never asked to learn such and such system, why do ppl think that I couldn't?" Auburn coaches raved about Cam's like ability with his teammates and his ability to lead men. It was so tangible when you saw that team in 2010 you could almost touch it.

Then you had ppl after his second year saying oh look at rg3 leading the redskins to the playoffs, he's a natural born leader. Cam's not. How did that work out? Why did pre draft reports claim that RG3 would be an effective leader while Cam's pre draft reports said otherwise. One guy won a national championship and his teammates and coaches raved about him.

Cam has said that it was hard for him to try and empathize with and rally guys who were a decade older than him with wife and kids.  That makes sense. But people pointed to this "selfish" behavior and lack of communication skills for this. But his self awareness has been outstanding throughout this entire process. I wouldn't take anybody over Cam.

I wasn't part of this website last year so I cant say how the comments here were..but I would comment on the Panthers social websites..twitter and Facebook..Every game we played the majority of the comments from PANTHERS fans were to get rid of Cam and start Anderson..and when Cam got hurt those couple of games then it was the band leading the way to continue Anderson over Cam..I can tell you the hate for Cam from our own fan base was not about culture then with the comments posted there..Hearing Cam say what he said about the Racism directed at him lets me know he had to read those same comments last year from our fan base..hell I was even listening to David Glenn yesterday and a "Panther" fan called in to say he love the Panthers but hate that Cam is so arrogant and showboats too much..He is our QB but yet you have issues with him celebrating and call yourself a Panthers fan??..nah dude..there is another reason is why you don't like our QB who is leading your team to a Superbowl..
