Gettleman road to GM

Loved this quote from Accorsi...

Quote

I've taken some degree of pleasure in reminding all of the teams that I called about him - 'You remember when I called you about Dave Gettleman?' And all those teams have since fired the guy that they hired instead of Dave.

"(Jerry Richardson) called me and said, 'Would you recommend this (hiring Gettleman), and is there any reason I shouldn't do it?'" Mara said. "I said, 'You should sign him right away. He'll do a great job for you.' It's worked out quite well for him. I remember the first league meeting after Dave was hired, I went up to Jerry and I asked him, 'How's it going?' He said, 'So far, so good. I really like him, there's just one problem.' I said, 'What's that?' He said, 'I can't understand a word he says.' Dave has that real severe New England accent. Jerry, of course, has that real southern accent, so the communication was a struggle at first. It seems like it's been a perfect marriage."

Now that is too funny!

Talking about scouting philosophy (from Voth)

“The way we looked at players, the way we scouted, just understanding that the average college player just isn’t fundamentally sound. You have to look at it differently.

For example, you take a linebacker, so the scout watches him and he says, ‘Well he doesn’t know how to use his hands.’ So he knocks his grade down a little bit. Well did anyone ever teach him? We don’t know.

The other part of it is too, to a certain degree, the college players the 20-hour rule, which hurts them. It hurts our ability to spend time the player. You’ve got to look at it a little bit differently.

I’ll give you a quick for instance. We go to the Combine last year and we’re looking at the DBs and they do a back-pedal-and-turn drill for time. I’m up in the box for the second group and I ask one of our defensive coaches how many guys are there? He said 53. I said how many of them can back pedal and turn? He said 12. I said so are we going to take the other 41 and throw them away? How many of the other guys have the athletic ability to back pedal and turn?

So you have to look at those a little differently. The League is different. You have 32 teams.”

    • If the losses were him not stepping up in key situations then it'd be a disappointment.
    • I'm well versed in the minutiea of the Canes radio broadcast system... lol I've been back in WNC for about 15 years now. And, until very recently, we would only get Predators games on the RSNs out here. So, radio was the only option for me to keep up with the team. These were the dark years, too. Maybe, once a year, you'd get to see us get smashed on national TV by some original 6 powerhouse. If you were really lucky, Jeff Skinner would bless you with one of his absolutely stunning pirouette passes to nowhere, before Wardo toppled over off his head, giving up a goal on his 70th shot faced that night for an inspiring 1-0 loss. But, that story sounds a whole lot cooler when Chuck Kaiton is telling it to you in real-time with the raspy drawl of a calving heifer! Before TuneIn or the Canes apps even existed, I used to have to find the one spot out in the back yard, where the hills and trees parted just right, that I could pickup 730(?)AM The Buzz all the way out in Catawba county. I'd sit in the shadow of the mighty Appalachians, staring out at the stars and getting high with stray cats, while being serenaded by the worst hockey you've never seen played in your life. That all, finally, started to change around the time TD bought the team. Part of that is due to the new NHL TV contracts and the constant reorganization of the RSNs themselves. Part, was me breaking up with that feral cat and moving to LKN to escape all the painful memories. The march of progress, and all that... I will say though, as much as I've criticized Dundon and as much as I loathe the existence of billionaires on principle, he has done an exceptional job of improving the fan experience, on the whole. Working with the league to expand the coverage map and bringing in outdoor games and all-star weeks has been huge. But, improving the quality on the ice (and of the ice) for all levels of hockey across the state has been even bigger! I forgot where I was going with all this, but... I'll still never forgive him for retiring Chuck K, though! HEY, HEY, WHADDYA SAY!!!!
