Just going by my admittedly faulty memory here, but that seems to be what I remember about how it happened.

That sounds like a kid just being dumb. Not knowing the laptop might have been covered under warranty or insurance. Kid makes mistake and tries to cover it up with bigger mistake. Sounds about right, probably would have done that myself a couple years ago.
