Coples visiting, taking physical

Fits Gettleman's strategy of signing early round busts with great measurables and trying to turn them around. He's done it with Oher, Ginn, Mitchell and Stephen Hill. All, but Hill, have been home runs and Hill is still to be determined. I'd rather go after William Hayes, but I'd be happy with Coples on an incentive laden deal.

Coples would fit perfectly in our 4-3. I see him replacing CJ for a few years. This could lessen the need for a DE in the draft even though I do believe we would still need one on the first round. Signing Coples gives us more flexability in the 1st and 2nd rounds

Gettleman's MO.  Fill in holes in Free Agency to leave freedom to draft BPA and not based on need.   But yeah, with the depth of exciting prospects at DE and even more at DT, I'd be pretty shocked if we didn't pick at least 1 - 2 Dline guys, and likely in the early rounds.

I truly don't think Coples should prevent Hayes or anyone else in addition to.

Gman loves his linemen. I completely agree with him. If we can get Dodd or Calhoun or some DE like that. We will be set in the front 4 for 5-6 years

I don't think Coples has anything to do with CJ, but adding DE depth is a huge need for the Panthers.  I'm not sure Coples is capable of being a starter, but Gettleman knows a lot more than I do.  Could be a good value signing.

I still CJ has something left in the tank, but he's not capable of playing as many downs as he once did and being effective.  I hope he is willing to negotiate and stay here.  CJ played well in the playoffs.  He had a bad regular season no doubt, but he was injured a lot.  People wanting to get rid of him need to consider that losing him leaves a huge hole at DE.  Not saying it can't be addressed, but CJ is still an average to above average DE even at this point.  He had 41 sacks in the 4 seasons prior to this past year.  2015 is the first time he hasn't earned his paycheck.

    • It appears that he sees things differently than the QB and OC, so Cam's advice is spot on. It isn't about number of targets, it's about quality of targets. Trust and being on the same page. BY doesn't know how to anticipate what XL is doing. And XL doesn't like where BY is placing passes. One on one film study would go a long way. More for BY than XL though. He has to adjust to XL. I really don't think XL can adjust on the fly.
    • If the team shows improvement, then he shouldn't be in danger of losing his job - even if the record doesn't reflect. This was a very young team (with a lot of new vet starters) that overperformed last season. Somebody's doing something right. Consistency is key with so much youth. And we're potentially looking at new starters at ILB and FS. Those are positions that take time to fully understand the defense. ILB calls the front 7. Safety calls the back 4. Injuries at WR and IOL killed the offense last season. Depth needs to be upgraded. Same with Edge. I think they would have won more games if Pat Jones doesn't go down early. Be smart with the roster and draft. Trade players for assets when it's time to pay them more than they're worth - yes, that includes BY if he doesn't make a pretty big jump. That's one of the many reasons Tillis is as important as anyone to the future of this team.
    • He had heart surgery a while back he looks Fraile I hope he is okay
