What will the KK Short and Star deals look like?

Star or Short neither would get Suh money even if they hit the open market right now.

I'm not expecting to see them get Suh money but I do know they will get paid as much as Luke or JNo(well at least I think Short will be)so I'm curious how that fits with our salary cap space.

Let's pray we can convince both to sign a somewhat team friendly deal and have a chance at the SB every year for the next 5-6 years.

This! hopefully they will want to continue to play with each other as a tandem.  KK was a beast but many of us forget to realize is how much of a impact Star is making causing less attention on KK.  There was just a thread on here where someone spoke to the Falcons OL on vacation and they mentioned the toughest guy to guard and face on the DL is Star.  Don't get me wrong they are Good players, but not sure they are near elite without one another.

Short will get around $16M/year for 5 years

Star will get around $8-9M/year for 5 years

I can mock out structures if you want but that's what the dollar amount is going to be. They will both get near top of the market deals for their position. 1T DT gets much less than 3T DT so that's the reason for the discrepancy.

Thanks, helpful.

How does the 5th year option for Star affect things?  (i.e. when would we work on a new deal for him?)

If I had to guess or really if it was me in charge I would do a 5 year Short extension this offseason which locks him up through 2021 then pick up the 5th year option on Star and do a 4-5 year extension for him next offseason with the $8M option being about the baseline for his new deal.

Do we have any chance of actually keeping both of them at those numbers??? 25 million plus a year for you starting DTs? I know DG loves his hog mollies, but that is a lot of money. It sucks to say but I think that we will only be keeping one of these guys long term unless they are willing to give the Panthers a discount.

Yes. The cap is skyrocketing. It's most important to get a Short deal done as soon as possible because the market as we know it right now is about to change and 3T DT is one of the most important positions on the defense and one of the highest paid. He would get Suh money if we wait until next year. Inflation will hit his position harder than others. We can wait until next year on Star, but Short needs to be done this year. I've mocked out the deals before on a salary cap calculator and they would fit on our cap and budget. We are not going to be able to pay everyone(i.e. may only be able to keep one of Turner/Norwell) but those two are of the utmost importance to keep in the interior of our DL.

People are going to be shocked at the amount of money players will start to get. There is ~$900M in league wide cap space this year, the rookie pay scale has fully kicked in and cycled and the 89% rule is about to kick in. There are only so many guys worthy of getting 2nd contracts and that money has to be spent somewhere so those guys are going to get overpaid. The current market is about to be shattered. Minimum contract and rookie wage scale increases aren't keeping up with the cap increases which is creating an enormous spread in available money because at any given time you will have around 30 guys on rookie deals or minimum deals.

Kawann's deal would look something like this. 5 year extension for $94.5 in new money($96M over 6 years) with a $30M signing bonus and $51M guaranteed. Ignore the dead money part because that isn't calculated correctly.

Please mock up both players, then send copies to DG and their agents. Both deals have my approval.

    • I've liked him since his rookie year as a prospect, but when he's been asked to play in a large capacity, he has simply not done well.   He does not really add anything, rather muddies up the room.  Fant is TERRIBLE as a blocker, a pure receiving TE.   Let's just put Tremble aside since he's PUP (although I still like him as a TE2, but yeah he's not our future starter)... Sanders has already shown better receiving skills than a Fant and has a nice ceiling.  Not to mention, he's got in-line run blocking skills.  I really want to see what he's capable of this year.  Also has a year+ experience now in Canales' offense, not to mention legit chemistry with Bryce. And after Sanders, I also imagine our staff is waiting to see how Mitchell Evans looks in camp as he's got the in-line blocking skills.  If he looks fully capable of filling in behind Sanders, then I don't see a need.  Overall, keep an eye out on early August moves.  They are usually soft indicators of how staff's view their rookie late rounders and roster overall.  This is a wait and see what the market presents and how they think their unit looks in camp.
    • Every team has different needs of the backup QB.   On some teams a young hopeful makes sense and on others an old worn out dude makes sense.  We are a little more in the in-between IMO where you probably would prefer a Fields, Pickett, Howell type IMO.   So a young disappoint that you there is still some hail mary hope in.....given BY essentially was benched both seasons for performance (I know that's not the official line going into Seattle but I think most would agree he got a break and should of been benched later that year).  I know we want Bryce to be the week 17 guy all season this upcoming year.  But it's still in the reasonable thought process that the other dude could show back up.
    • I wouldn't mind it if they bring him in cheap for competition. I would imagine he would vie for the 3rd TE spot with the rookie.
