Hope he retired. That would save us $2.1 million under the cap. If he was cut, it would save us $1.6 million.

Class guy, gave us 4 very nice years.

Never was really flashy just solid player.  Though the stats didn't show it.  When he went into the lineup our defense still was just as tough.

Good Luck Dwan in whatever you do.

Aaaand there ya go...

Yup, I was wrong. I just usually remember the Panthers announcing all the cuts in the same time frame under Gettleman. I should not have assumed. Either way I am glad they were able to fee up so much space.

Bill Voth math (probably already posted elsewhere):

"By releasing Chandler ($1.3 million), Johnson ($11.0 million) and Edwards ($1.6 million), the Panthers saved themselves $13.9 million in 2016 cap space in a matter of hours. Or, in other words, an entire Josh Norman franchise tag. "

interesting...

Something is coming down the pipe....I don't know it is but I have a feeling it is something substantial.  Not saying it will be a splash signing but something different is coming.

The imagery here sounds like someone taking a dump. He can feek it commin,  dont know if itll splash or not..

Im alittle surprised by this, Dave must love the draft class. I mean the odds of getting what dwan brought to the team form 1.7 million, that's a tall task. I know there will be UDFAs, there should be a few extra DLmen given this great class.

500,000 dead space + replacement salary > or < 1,700,000 2016 salary is the question. They must feel that a minimum salary DT can yield similar results.

Honestly, Dwan wasn't much more than a body last year. It was fairly clear he just doesn't have it anymore and he only figures to decline more next year. He's easily replaceable by a cheap vet in FA or a mid round pick. He was great and I bet he had a huge role in mentoring Kawann but his time is up.

DG is trading up in the draft for two reasons

  1. Cap $'s are not going to big FA's, it is going to KK, Norman, Star and Kony.
  2. The roster is loaded and there is a high likelihood that a few picks might not make the roster

So, if your going to cut the pick why not trade it.

I thought he looked fine for someone that played around 40% of snaps. He didn't look too old to me. I hope star and KK remain heathly for the whole upcoming season......

I'd tell Wes Horton to pack on 30+ LBs and that's the way to make the team as dwans replacement. Horton was always good against the run and played some DT on certain downs .

Possible they just hadn't informed him yet.

I know the team doesn't like guys finding out they've been cut by seeing it on Twitter.

Omg your like the fourth person to spew crap about a second year player being extended (Ealy) they can't extend him right now or Norwell either it's against the rules....

He is in his 3rd yr now. Contract discussions will happen 12 months from now, before he goes into his 4th yr. If you bring in a high-priced free agent you're probably going to have to put his contract on the books for 3 to 4 years. If KK, Short and Norman all sign this year there is only so many cap dollars left for this time next year.

Norwell is an undrafted rookie. Undrafted rookies get 3 year deals. Norwell is playing on his last year of his contract. The panthers have until September to sign Norwell before he is a free agent because DG does not negotiate during the season.

I didn't have any gripe with Dwan's performance this past season.  Great guy for us.  Solid.  Good leader & mentor.

But I'm not surprised he's cut.  Given that this is a deep draft at DT, and assuming we draft a DT we want to actually PLAY, there needs to be some room in the rotation.  Given that we will presumably resign Love, we already have 3 guys pretty well locked in.  Need an open spot for a new guy, and cutting Dwan at age 34 makes sense.

Should we not find the DTs we want / need in the draft, we could always resign Dwan for another year if needs be.  Doubt he'll be going to another team...., but who knows.
