What Positions need a Vet answer for us right now??

WOW!!

Recommended Posts

Gettleman's stated strategy is to fill out the roster in free agency to set him self up so there aren't any true needs in the draft. Needs meaning we actually don't even have enough players at the position rather than the traditional meaning of a position that needs to be upgraded. So any position we lost a player will get filled by a vet replacement.

DE - lost Allen

SS - lost Harper

CB - lost Finnegan/Tillman

3T DT - lost Edwards

OT - lost Chandler

OG - losing Amini

1T DT - Love has not re-signed so if he leaves then we will get someone else at this position

OC - lost Velasco, but already replaced by Gradkowski

WR - lost Cotchery but replaced by Benjamin and Hills return so no movement here

I would suspect that we will make at least 5 and up to 7 signings to fill out the roster at the aforementioned positions prior to the draft except C and WR which have already been filled. OT and OG could be filled by a single player. A fair number of those probably won't even make the 53 man roster similar to guys like Trusnik, Todman and Boykin from last year.

I have learned that it is better for me just to sit back and let Gettleman work, than to try and guess what he is doing and fret on it. I will be relaxed, and watch it unfold.

What's the fun in that??

I agree with DE.  We have Ealy and CJ.....and then a bunch of unproven situation guys.  We would be one injury away from trouble at DE.

Didn't Horton start something like 15 games in 2014 when we suddenly lost Hardy?  Not saying he's the answer, but Horton & Addison aren't really unproven.  But at this point they're still rotational guys, not starters.

I assume we'll add a high round DE pick if at all possible in the draft.

My higher priority for vet signings is for a DT since we currently have 2 vacancies.  Then Nickel Back.  Maybe a Safety.

Nice post.

Just to add to your list

P - lost Nortman, but already signed Swayze Waters.   I assume though that we'll add another punter for competition either via the draft, UDFA or possibly a FA.  I have no idea if there are any other decent punters on the market.  Assume we'll wait until after the draft for any signing if needed.

I agree. We need to improve our pass rush; an injury-and that has been CJ's MO of late, would be catastrophic.  Heck, to assume that Addison, Ealy, and CJ can give us the pressure this D needs is ambitious thinking.   As we all know, it takes time for an elite talent to develop into a pro 43 DE.   Even first rounders will take time--we have a shot now--lets bring in a talent.

    • He makes a good point about Wallace.  In fairness to Wallace it is hard to play your position as freely as you need to when your defensive line is getting pushed around like ragdolls.  One of the greatest attributes a defensive line has is sucking up blocks, freeing up your linebackers.  Our defensive line couldn't suck up a lollipop more or less blocks.  I think Evans, Sanders and Tremble are going to be a really nice TE group.  I can see all three getting time on the field.  If Sanders can improve as a blocker teams won't be so inclined to believe it is a pass play whenever Sanders is on the field.  Ryan Fitzgerald, I think was an awesome pick-up. Hopefully he can fill our kicker void. Luke Kandra many turn out to be our next Norwell.  Everything I have heard about him says he's a beast.  He needs some refinement, but the good news is he's got Hunt and Lewis (arguably the best guard tandem in the league) to learn from.
    • Great teams build through the draft and have several young players that start that are on rookie contracts. It's important to hit on players in rounds 4 thru 7.  These should be future starters and solid depth.  When you hit on most of your picks you free up a lot of cap space for those one- or two-year players to fill spots you are thin at. No GM is going to perfect on all their picks.  You're going to whiff every once in a while.  That was Hurney problem.  He'd nail the first pick but after that it was reach after reach and we couldn't get any depth on this team. I'm excited about Morgan as our GM and hopefully he'll be around a long time.  It will be even better if Canales can continue to grow as a head coach, both in the development of young players and play calling. I remember last season after Young came back in the lineup and started to perform well.  We saw different plays I had only seen other teams use.   If Canales's play design and play calling continue to grow. Morgan and Canales will be linked together for a long time.  It would be nice to see a Coach and GM together for a decade or two. Go Panthers
