Players Under Contract Through 2017

A great way to look at our upcoming draft is through evaluating the positions which we have players signed through 2017 and beyond.  Of course Gettleman's mantra is BPA, but we know it is influenced by other factors.

 

To understand how our GM thinks, you have to realize he thinks years ahead when making moves.  The short 1-year contracts are advantageous in gaining us compensatory picks.  Drafting well and re-signing core players is also key.  Looking at future position needs is key to retaining talent.

 

Here is what our roster looks like in 2017. I have organized it in terms of being relatively set, not needing immediate help, needs more attention, and completely void of players.

The following positions are relatively set:

QB: Cam Newton (5), Derek Anderson (2), Joe Webb (2)

RB: Jonathan Stewart (2), Cameron Artis-Payne (3), Brandon Wegher (2)

TE: Greg Olsen (3), Ed Dickson (2)

MLB: Luke Kuechly (6), David Mayo (3)

NT: Star Lotulelei (2), Paul Soliai (2)

 

The following positions do not need immediate help:

WR: Kelvin Benjamin (2), Devin Funchess (3), Kevin Norwood (2), Corey Brown (RFA)

FB: Mike Tolbert (2)

SLB: Shaq Thompson (3)

WLB: Thomas Davis (2)

CB2: Bene Benwikere (2)

RG: Trai Turner (2)

RT: Daryl Williams (3)

RDE: Kony Ealy (2)

LG: Andrew Norwell (RFA)
 

The following positions will need more attention:

C: Gino Gradkowski (3), Tyler Larsen (2)

LDE: Ryan Delaire (2), Aurthur Miley (2)

FS: Tre Boston (2)

SS: Dean Marlowe (2)

 

The following positions are currently completely void of players in 2017

LT, DT2, CB1, nCB,

 

Of course, this will change when players are re-signed.  Kawaan Short and Kurt Coleman come to mind.  Also, next year it becomes fiscally advantageous to cut Stewart. But, as far as looking at current contracts, it may help predict our draft moving forward.
 

Does this information change the way you approach the draft?  You better bet Gettleman is well aware of this.

You can probably add Norwell and Philly as under contract. Even though they aren't technically, they will be RFAs and we will without a doubt give both of them a 2nd round tender which basically eliminates another team signing them to an offer sheet.

when I've been drafting  on Fanspeak, I've been drafting for the future in every round.  Nice to see things laid out like this.  I don't think we'll find a first rounder starter unless we take a safety.

One position that no one talks about that I've been trying to address is center.  It wouldn't surprise me if Ryan retires with tread left on the tires just like his buddy Gross.

Especially considering the two voidable years on his contract, after this season.  Very good opportunity for him to mosey on out, if he so chooses.

For 2017 we are 60 million under the cap (with this years cap number) with only 31 players signed, We will have 19 Free agents. So I expect a lot of change coming in the next couple years

I'm not a cap guru by any stretch, so take with a grain of salt.  I think that we'd take the cap hit of whatever voidable years are on the contract, at the time the contract is voided.

That's what happened with Harper & Cotchery, I believe.  Sounds right.

Norwell is gonna be a 1st round tender after this season. Next priority for the Panthers is to lock up the interior of OL & DL espeically when the foundation and system of your team is built around the interior.

My thoughts are that Gman wants to keep this team as young as possible, building through the draft, so that if a core player does emerge out of our draft class each year, we have the roster built with replacements for our aging vets whom many are still looking for big pay days

...Shaq, Williams, Bene', Boston etc.

I am going to go out on a limb and suggest something that no one else seems to be saying.  I bet we draft a LT replacement in the first.  Someone to learn behind Oher. 

 

I know everyone would be pissed we didn't draft a day 1 starter, but it makes the most sense if someone is there.
