From what I've read his blocking needs quite a bit of work, but as a pass catcher he should make an immediate impact. Most mocks have him as a 2nd rounder, but if Gman wants him I suspect he'll have to grab him in the 1st or trade up in the 2nd.

Yep.  This is where our trust in Gettleman, the scout, comes in.  I read online articles/evaluations, hear talking heads talk, and watch youtube clips to scout a player.  Gettleman uses a whole team of professional and experienced scouts, a high-level coaching staff, and his own immense scouting experience to make evaluations.  So, I have to trust him to know more than I do, and as a result, I'll be comfortable with whomever he picks, whether it's someone I was high on or not.  I'm just happy to finally have someone like him who has earned that trust running our team.

Think of him as Greg Olsen clone but who can run & pass block much better. He still has room in his body frame to grow with NFL training he could be a smaller version of Gronk.

 

Ok, after watching that video, he looks a lot like Olsen...both in his pass catching and his blocking.  He has soft hands and catches the ball easy, like Greg does.  He does seem to be a bit of a get in the way blocker right now, but I think once he gets into an NFL weight room, he can be much better.  It looks like he gets into good position, just needs to get stronger.  I'm feeling better about him being the pick.

Now that I'm coming around on him, watch us take someone totally unexpected just to throw us off.

I agree, it's not the biggest deal, but that does seem awfully low for a 1st round TE.

But he came back and did 21 reps at his pro day.  Don't know what the problem was at the combine, but you don't get 8 reps stronger in a week.  So, I'm assuming there was a reason for the low number of reps at the combine.

Yup, mark any concerns from me off for the 30 pick.  Olsen, while great is long in the tooth, and 2 TE sets can be lethal with so many teams having to play nickel and dime all the time.
