Nah, baw.

I'm a fan-boy of a proven team player.

You're a fan-boy of a proven (though uncharged, but charged anywhere else in the real world) felon asshole.

DIFFERENCE.

For the record, as it pertains to the thread, I don't much care if his number, or any other number is retired or not. It's just a number.

But I'm not going to sh*t on the contributions he made in his time here, because I actually witnessed them. If you want to, have at it, but I think it's incredibly douchetastic to do so when you literally were not around for 10 of the 13 years he was with our franchise.

And I didn't either if you have any semblance of reading comprehension.

He can "contribute" and "achieve" until the cows come home, still doesn't make him any less of a terrible person and ultimate asshole.

We just don't retire numbers folks. The reason Sam Mills was retired is because of his contributions on and off the field. He was a leader. JR wanted his number retired because Mills set the example for all future players on what a Panther should be. Love or hate Smith, he had problems off the playing field. The only other retired player that has played at a great level and also was great off the field was Gross and we still use his number. Look at all the great players we currently have on and off the field. If we retired all of thier numbers, and future players of the same quality, there would hardly be any numbers left.

I'm not saying that he should or shouldn't. I don't really have an opinion. But looking at the standard that the team has set of only having Mills number retired so far I don't see it happening.

Mills was the first, Smitty will be the second.  There's only one other Panther player ever to epitomize the team as much as Mills and that's Smitty.  TD is the only other that comes even remotely close so far, and he should be the third when the time comes.  We won't have many numbers retired, #51, 89, 58, eventually probably #1 and maybe #59.  After that, won't be many others.  Might not be the same year Smitty retires from the game, but #89 should be retired soon thereafter.

Mills was honored for contributions on and off. I'm sorry to say, but Smith doesn't fit that description. The only other two that probably should be in the same class as Mills is Gross and Davis. We still use Gross' number. We very well could use Davis' number as well after he's gone. Maybe not the next year. We used #69 a couple seasons after Gross, but still.

Smitty's off field contributions FAAAAR outweigh Gross's.  At least, the stuff that's made public.  Maybe Gross did a lot more for the community than I'm aware of, but Smitty's charitable contributions were unmatched by any Panther ever as far as I know, aside from maybe TD.

Mills, Gross and Davis were all leaders though and never put themselves first. You can't say the same for Smith.

You mean the guy who made sure the media was always there every time he did anything in the nature of community service looks like he did more than the other guys?

INCONCEIVABLE!

    • I agree.  I don’t think I have ever been accused of being a Howell fan. No more than fan of some other random QB.   But I watched and I saw. He has some talent. Maybe I didn’t watch close enough to see his weaknesses.
    • He is a pit bull when it comes to that.  And after he missed out last year on Williams, it seems he is trying a different approach, looks like. Don’t hold back. No half measures, because someone will come and full measure your ass. Close the deal. He left a little opening for The Patriots last year.  He closed so far this year. Of what we know about.
    • They have been doing the mercenary one year RB now for a little while. Foreman..  It works pretty well. You can find ball carriers. The passing game trips a lot of those guys up. Pass blocking, route running, they have a lot to know.    Rico wasn’t a great pass blocker but he got in the way most of the time. He is a really good pass catcher.     He’s tough. Needs to find out why he was cramping late in the games. If he can fix that maybe can step up even more. Wish him luck. I think he’ll do well.    If Brooks can be something, what a bonus that would be at this point.  I really believe they went for him because of his extra layer with being a good receiver. And we need more of that with what we are working with trying to move the ball.
