Most of these guys were pretty solid picks. I wonder if Tannehill would have been the choice had he been there?

If you mean "solid picks based off of predraft rankings at the time" maybe. Otherwise no. Just no. Especially when you factor in how solid of a pick Luke was lol.

That list hurts.

A couple of decent players, granted, but that phrase should never be used in conjunction with the top eight picks of the draft.

Next time somebody tries to tell you that draft position matters when you're evaluating how good a player is, remind them that Trent Richardson was drafted ahead of Luke Kuechly.

And to think. The Seahawks would have picked him if we hadn't. Scary thought!

Scarier thought: Hurney reportedly had Mark Barron rated higher on his draft board. The Saints saved us from ourselves.

Imagine if the Saints had drafted Kuechly and we got stuck with Barron.

We are blessed as a franchise for having the best player in the league at QB and MLB. We always be competitive because of them. Then take into account guys like KB, Kalil, Olsen, Turner, Norwell, Star, KK, Butler, TD, Shaq. Then the next tier of guys like  Ginn, and Funchess, CJ, Ealy, Coleman, Stewart. We have the most talented team in the game most likely.

I do think that Luke could go down as the GOAT at his position, he's just flat out incredible, but let's just remember that things have changed since Urlacher and Lewis came into the NFL.  Urlacher started in 2000 and Lewis came in 96 and the game had fewer plays per game and the running game was more pro style and less spread giving the MLB less opportunity to rack up such astounding numbers like Luke has.  I'm not saying that Luke isn't the greatest (he may be, and IMO will be as long as he stays healthy), but right now I think if nothing else, he definitely should be considered on par with both Urlacher and Lewis.

What say you Huddlers, what stats of Luke's impress you the most?

They're not stats, as I'm not a stats guy, but:

  • the way he commands the defense, the epitome of a "general on the field"
  • the way he gets into a OC/QBs head and knows the play before they call it out, which comes from
  • the way he works so hard at his craft and to know his opposition every week (really every day of the year)
  • the way he is as a teammate, bringing others around him along on the way. There's no question in my mind he'll be a great coach once he's finished his playing career.
  • the way he identifies his weaknesses and works to turn them in to strengths, like you mentioned his down field coverage last year, and getting off RB chip blocks the year before. Dying to find out what this years focus is.

How he carries himself off the field and how much of a warrior he is on the field, a pro's pro who you want to be representing you.

The man missed how many games last year too

3.5 with that concussion.

Those that still attempt to say Kuechly isn’t on the level of a Lewis or Urlacher tend to lean on the notion that Kuechly is more of a coverage linebacker, thus nowhere near the hitter that those two were.

I don't understand how anyone who has watched anything more than Luke's highlights of 2016 could even try to say that. It's the dumbest thing I've heard said about Luke.

    • A winning record would be nice, but I still have us winning around the 6 to 8 game mark. Realistically we should beat the Jets and Saints, that gets us to 5 wins. After that, we have to face a lot of potential play off teams and our divisional opponents. I think we’ll win 1 or 2 of those games to take us to 6 or 7 wins, perhaps 8 wins if we can spring a further surprise.  Is that enough progress for head coach and QB? I’m not sure, it will depend on performances and output. That said, it’s nice to be back in a position where we are thinking about the play offs.
    • I would tend to agree about not falling into the trap and paying a below average QB, but sometimes situations can “force” a team to pay that QB. For example, if we play ourselves into a 9-8 like record, then what options will we have in the draft? Or do we avoid the draft and trade for or sign someone in free agency?  I’m not convinced by the 2026 QB draft class. There’s some intriguing prospects but no one that really screams “draft me”. I’m not sure we’ve got anyone really that stands out as a trade candidate or free agent signing. So although we might not want to commit a big money contract to Young, him playing well and showing progress might force the team’s hand.
    • Realistically we would be looking at no more than a mid round pick for Dowdle or Chuba. Are we really that desperate for a mid round pick? Not really. I would much prefer us utilise the two RBs in a 1-2 punch similar to how we used D-Will and Stewart. After all, Bryce is not Drew Brees. He won’t throw for 300+ yards and carry the team consistently as a passer. So having a strong running game with a 1-2 punch will be beneficial to him, and it will also be beneficial to the RBs because we can spell them and not overwork them.
