With Thor not playing and Cam not running because it's pre-season, the Cheatriots only had to defend half our offense. Last year's plan on how to stop the Panthers by doubling Olsen and keeping Cam in the pocket was sort of proved true tonight

It's pretty obvious our staff knows what the run game will be and are trying extra hard to find out what we have in the passing game. This is pretty obvious if you watch our play calling this preseason compared to any regular season in panthers history

That is something that I did note. We were unbalanced with the passing attack when our run offense was actually being productive. In fact, the run game helped us in that one drive when we scored the field goal. In that regard, you can say that we would've pounded the ball more had it been a regular season game. What we saw tonight was an insight to what the offense would look like if we relied mainly on Cam's arm.

It just wasn't pretty other than the O-line giving Cam enough time early on.

I'm not overly worried about the offense either.  Hard to evaluate the Panthers run game in preseason since they artificially limit what they do.  The execution of Cam and the WR's was tough to watch though.

That was his worst performance in a LONG time.  Hope it's out of his system.

Tonight definitely revealed how much we need Greg against any decent team.  I know we got by ok without him last week, but that was Tennessee... tonight we had a big 88-shaped hole when our 1s were playing O.

Really hope some of these young TEs learn quickly.  We really need more depth behind Greg.  It's a bit scary to have both Greg & Ed battling injuries this preseason... neither are young... hoping nothing lingers.

At this point I think 4 TEs could happen:  Greg, Ed, Simonson & Mucas?  Sandland / Deaver battle for PS spot?

1) Ginn needs to go back to being a one trick pony and stop running routes where the degree of difficulty is anything more than a ball straight into his hands.

2) Cam needs to stop trying to get Kelvin involved. He'll earn his targets just like every other receiver, when he's actually open.

3) Run the goddamn ball. We are a running team first and foremost. So run it. I don't care if there's 12 in the box, run the goddamn ball.

We keep those three things in mind and we'll be fine.

1. That makes no sense. But it's practice.

2. It's practice games to practice things.

3. Eh.....OK.......legit . But everyone would be batching about that too.

Well, we weren't running our offense.  It was an extremely watered-down version of the playbook.  And on top of that, the offensive plays that were called were not within the flow of the game; it was sandlot 1-on-1 football.

That said, the high throws and other execution-related aspects, i.e., the freaking fundamentals, worry me a great deal.

No pun intended, but yes, Cam looked like he took a step back in his fundamentals, back to throwing off his back foot again.  He needs to keep focusing on this.  It does make a difference.  We saw it clearly last year.

    • Bryce and Dave will determine how many games this team wins next year. It’s not on the WRs. The RBs. LBs. This is about 2 things: 1. Can Bryce continue to come up big in the few key downs that decide most games?  2. Can Canales evolve his play calling to counter punch like the big boys do. Half time adjustments.  teams that score 30+ points on the regular win more games than not. That’s on Bryce and Dave. The offense is top 10 at every position group, save for TE and QB. A baller TE is gravy but not crucial when the receivers are dudes.  The defense is the defense. It’ll be better this season, hopefully by a large margin, but Dave/Bryce is really where it’s at.
    • Normally I'd wholeheartedly agree with this. But I feel like teams figured out this offense after the Raiders game. Bryce was so inept the first 2 games that we couldn't really even run the offense. Dalton's first game showed what we had. But after that game, coverages got a lot tighter and windows were smaller. When Bryce came back in, his ability to extend plays made a big difference. It's really difficult to stop a QB that can beat/escape 1on1 tacklers. It puts a lot of pressure on the defense when you blitz. And he was completing throws in tight coverage with anticipation. Point being Bryce wasn't throwing to wide open receivers that were schemed open by the offense. Occasionally yes. But not often.
    • With the additions we've made to our roster combined with the state of the division and the conference as a whole there is no excuse for this team not to make a legitimate push for 8-9 wins. Anything less is honestly inexcusable. There will be no more free passes for being a doormat in this iteration of the league where even mediocre teams are competing for playoff spots.
