Questions raised as Carolina Panthers come out flat in loss to Patriots

Forget Cam, if we don't get back to running the ball how we used to, it's a wrap. Shula and his long developing routes isn't going to work against defenses that drop back in coverage knowing we're going to throw the ball

We always run the ball like poo in preseason.  Always.  Our run game works when Cam is mixed in and that never happens until the regular season.

starting O looks no worse than it did in preseason of the our 15-1 season

We were the second most running team in terms of pct and first in attempts. That's not going to change much despite whatever they try in preseason.

I'm making reference to the SB and last night

SB we threw 41 times and ran for 27 times

Last night we threw 55 times and ran 20

You can say we were testing out the pass game, whatever. We forced throwing the ball then and last night. That can't happen this year

I will also say that the refs seemed to miss a lot of calls like blocks in the back, holding, pass interference. Is that how games are going to be called this year? I hope not. Very sloppy. Did they show on TV that the ref "high fived" a Patriot player after he reversed our 2 point conversion? We were all like, WTF???

Did you miss the SB? One thing I know it's the Panthers never get favor in the eyes of the refs.

Look at our numbers last preseason.  We were pass heavy then.

no point pounding Stewart and Cam in the preseason and we never do. Cam never runs in preseason (only scrambles).

Cam was off. It happens.  When he is off in preseason it simply always looks bad because we never run our offense and in real games he counters some of the "being off" with his legs.

only think of major concern for me is we aren't ready IMO at DB for this season

Yeah, the secondary is definitely a major concern

We looked like one of those teams the comes out of nowhere, loses the Superb Owl then drops like a rock back down to mediocrity last night. That game was poorly played and coached from top to bottom.

When Funchess is the bright spot with 5 receptions out of 10 throws... you just aren't living up to expectations.

Hoping this was just an off night on a game that doesn't matter.

I'm not looking for favors. I'm looking for as-accurate-as-possible reffing. Even with an extra official on the field it was ugly with the missed calls on both sides. Rivera was livid a few times.

Fair never happens. At any level.

    • I mean, if Moore really wants out, then it would behoove the Bears to make it happen sooner than later. X is a lot younger and cheaper, and may be a better fit for Johnson's musings than a disgruntled, unnecessary, overpaid vet. If they can dump his salary and maybe get a fourth or so in return, it may be worth it to them. As for development, I'm not concerned. You're talking about a seeming bust, a day three guy and a UDFA. They are developing relative to their ceilings. I doubt any of them will ever command the coverage, money, or the respect that Moore has acquired. He's a tier above them. Yes, even X.
    • IMO, if Ceedee plays against us, the game probably goes the other way. Same with Tyreek Hill and the Dolphins. Our team just isn't designed to beat teams with two high level receivers like that. But when you look at the league, how many teams really have two guys of that caliber?  There's nothing wrong with defensive adjustments, but sometimes I think a lot of fans want Evero to call a different play like a game on madden, and defensive football just isn't like that. That said, I thought we did a much better job this season against the Cowboys of flipping Jaycee and at least making them work for it, opposed to last season when they literally just lined CeeDee up on the other side of the field every single snap.  For us to just straight up switch to consistent man coverage, or a different zone, or whatever, we likely would consistently need different personnel on the field. Doing it a few times a game is a gamble and can work, but if we consistently run man coverage against the Cowboys, eventually a RB is going to beat a linebacker, or something of that nature with our personnel. Part of the reason Evero likes this scheme is that, while we have our defaults and presets, what we do is very multiple, and you can do a lot of different things pre and post snap. We are a challenging defense to read. But as you said, if guys are getting beat, it doesn't really matter what you call.
