What happened to Funchess?

For Shaq it simply has to do with the offensive personnel on the field. We can't play 3 LB's against 3 and 4 WR offensive sets. The only way to keep Shaq on the field in that scenario is to sub out TD which might actually be a conversation worth having as it looks like father time is finally starting to catch up with him.

That wasn't the tune Ron and Dave were singing after they drafted him. Shaq will let us stay in our base D more often they sang. Won't have to tip our hand so much on D they sang.

Not true. I actually went back and looked at their comments after he was drafted recently when someone brought this up before. What they said was that Shaq would allow us to stay in our base defense against 2 TE sets rather than subbing Klein out for a safety(Colin Jones) to get in the buffalo nickel package and they were right about that. We do stay in base against 2 TE sets now, but the 2 TE sets are not in vogue as much as they were. They never said we were going to stay in base against 3 WR sets.

Got a link? That's not the way I remember it, but you might be right.

Basically this happened.

DA not even looked to Funchess the entire game and he was open a couple times.

On this play, DA tried to run and fumbled the ball.

One play in particular DA forced to Olsen on third down and Funch was screaming down the field wide open.

The dude was wide open on multiple ossacions last night.  He toasted his man in atlanta everytime he was out there.

The Anderson run fumble.  Funchess ran a quick slant and was wide open at the stick stop stood there.  Stared at Anderson trying to get his attention, then Anderson took off running his way.  Blows my mind.  After the 1st quarter Tampa knew we were only targetting KB and Olsen.  The int to KB, there were 3 guys around him because they knew who it was going to.  The endzone pass to olsen, the were 2 guys around him because they knew who it was gojng to.

DA showed me last night he is a one read QB.

"It will allow us to keep three linebackers on the field when teams go to 12 personnel or two TE personnel. It gives us more opportunities to do things with a true 4-3 front. He was the highest rated player we had on our board left."

Speaking of Shaq I would be fine with him replacing TD in the starting lineup. He looks slow this year and could become a liability where we have a healthy athletic stud who needs experience.

I would rather see him cover some of the bigger WRs/TEs in the slot on passing downs like he was used in the AZ playoff game as he shut Fitz out.

Very few teams actually use a bigger WR in the slot. Though I wish that is how we would use Funchess.

    • Its really wild to watch this part of the community boil down the success of the 2025 Panthers to whether or not BY9 busts or breaks out. Ill take middle of the road mistake free game manager that distributes the ball and orchestrates the offense.  If we can get that with a D that doesnt put us in a 27 point+ hole every week the team can improve. Id love a deep post season run but honestly at this point Id be ecstatic about feeling like we could win every week.   Jake is never going to get a yellow jacket but damn if he didnt make watching the team fun.     eta: I think too many people are looking for an I told you so moment over their pre-draft "evaluation" of Bryce
    • I consider last year Bryce's rookie year.....and I expect some regression/D adjustment in his second season in Canales' O.  Film is film.   So yeah, I agree....he won't be the dude that opened up the year week 1 or closed the door week 17.  We will get some dude in between it all most likely.  Which IMO puts us in a really awkward no man's land with Bryce.
    • The question is which Bryce shows up game 1. Do we get week 2 (2024) Bryce, or week 18 (2024) Bryce?  I will say that his progression after the benching last year was amazing. He literally got better every game - sans Dallas. Like every week he did something we hadn't seen him do before. And it wasn't luck, toss it up for grabs plays like Penix did against Carolina. Penix was just throwing the ball as hard as he could in the direction of a receiver and hoping they'd make a play for him. What we saw from Bryce was different. Decision making, reading defenses, recognizing blitzes and where they were coming from, knowing his hot, avoiding pressure and manipulating the pocket, throwing with anticipation, taking shots downfield, and running the ball surprisingly well. Stats don't always tell the story. Did he miss some throws that he should have made - sure did. But the clutch gene is strong with this one. One score game and Carolina has the ball with 2 minutes on the clock - I'm confident he'll give them a chance to win more than he doesn't.
