How Gettleman's decision's led us to where we stand now

In 2012 we saw a team on the rise as they closed the season winning 6 of there last 7. Not only that but 6 of their losses were very close ones and decided by less than a TD. This team had talent and was being held back by horrible game management by Rivera. This left him a 2-14 in games decided by a TD or less and almost all of those losses could be pinned on his in game management.  Finally in week 3 Riverboat Ron is born and 2013 rebounds from an 0-2 start to finish 12-4.

Then Strike 1 against Gettleman occurs!

The 2014 offseason was a disaster. It all started in March of 13 when Gettleman was looking for ways to get us in better shape cap wise. One of those moves included restructuring Gross' contract to end after the 13 season as every year after became voidable. Gross had originally planned to retire after his original contract was set to expire after the 14 season but did not fight Gettleman on this and quietly agreed to make that his last year. So Gettleman knew that come 2014 he'd have to find a replacement for Gross a year and 2 draft's in advance. He did nothing and the result led to Byron Bell the worst RT in the game being move to the left and converting an undrafted DT in Nate Chandler to take over as the new worst RT in the game.

That was not the end of the O-line shuffle either. Wharton retired after 2013, as did Geoff Hangartner.

It got worse from there. Steve Smith was cut and saved the team a Whopping 1 million in cap space. Ginn and Lafell were allowed to walk as they had earned bigger paydays than we valued them at (Understandable). However there was no clear or immediate plan to replace all of these players and instead of building off the success of a team that was 17-5 in its last 22 regular season games he hit the reset button.

How does Gettleman explain blowing all of this up? Salary cap hell he says over and over. OK, I can see that. But then why franchise Hardy and give up 13.1 million or 10% of our overall cap for the year to a player you know is not in the plans long term? Voth reported even without the domestic issues it was never intended for Hardy to be back after that year.

Not only that but we had a very bad secondary in 13 and thanks to the pass rush it was masked very well. The only bright sports that year were Norman emerging, Mike Mitchell and Quinten Mikell who was signed off the street. You'd of thought that unit couldn't get much worse but it did!   Antoine Cason, Melvin White, Thomas Decoud and Roman Harper were the new bodies here.  They worked out so well they are all gone now lol. With 1 maybe 2 still in the league?

To be fair he did go out and attempt to draft replacements for Smith,Hardy, and Wharton and with the Benjamin, Ealy, Turner. 2 of them turned out to be pretty good picks it appears. Jury is still out on Ealy but its not looking promising.

2015 Comes around and cap space can no longer be used an excuse as Gettleman heads up his 3rd year. Now the Cap has increased 20 million dollars since he took over and he's spent 2 years gutting the team to get to where it needs to be.

He does a phenomenal job in the offseason at filling holes. Michael Oher! Thank God no more Byron Bell! Charles Tillman! An above average Corner, top notch locker room presence. Kurt Coleman, didn't know much about him at the time but he did well last year at FS. Brings Ginn back for another year with Cam! Draft's a stud LB (Thompson) gets Cam another weapon in Funchess. Plus he made some key extensions happen. Cam,Luke, Olsen, and Davis!

So now with Norman fully developed and ready to take on the number 1 CB role, plus you got an excellent guy to pair him with on Tillman on the other side. Coleman fits in perfectly and Harper is the weakest link on D but everyone is totally okay with that. Outside pass rush becomes a bit of an issue as well so lucklily Allen request a trade and we land him. Gettleman keeps searching and finds Delaire as well.

All of a sudden we improved our Secondary dramatically! While Oher is no stud by any means he was a major upgrade to Byron Bell and it showed. Remmers also did an excellent job compared to the nightmare Nate Chandler from the previous year. So now we have a decent 0-line, got Cam some weapons to work with and poof 15-1 happens.

Strike 2, the 2015 offseason!

Bye Norman, Tillman, Allen, Harper! No replacements for any of them. Sure we drafted 3 corners starting in round 2 but thats impossible to expect them to pickup where the other guys left off. Again I can not stress enough how we went from one of the best secondaries in the league to possibly the worst in one offseason. 0 excuse for it. The one thing he could have done to try and offset it was to upgrade our underperforming outside pass rush and he did nothing there at all.

So now our best remaining player from 2015's secondary is moved out of his natural position and gets a hefty contract to underperform at SS.

The 2 free agents we signed this year are backups and were not really major areas of concern. Soliai, Gradkowski. Then for some reason we decide to keep Tolbert when he showed absolute signs of a decline running last year and horrid pass protection. I'm indifferent on the extension of Oher as his contract is a fair deal based off his play last year. I am glad we extended Kalil as well. But other than that we have gone backwards and the product on the field shows.

We have a horrible pass rush, horrible secondary and our elite LB core is lost trying to mask all of these deficiencies . Our offense over performed and exceeded any reasonable expectation last year and instead of continuing to build on it and improve we just stood pat and allowed the inevitable fall back to reality to occur.

So now here we sit at 1-4 and unlike previous slow starts under Rivera, theres not much hope to cling to this year.

The worst part about it is, I really don't even see how we can pull ourselves out of this long term. Gettleman prides himself on finding bargain bin band aides such as Tillman, Harper, Mikell, Mike Mitchell, Ginn, Cotchery,Jared Allen,Chase Blackburn,  and even CJ this year, etc. to come in short term and in some cases less than a full year.

Problem with that is it does not do any good if you don't stock your roster with young developmental guys behind them learning the ropes and ready to assume taking over these roles. In fact he either ignores the problem all together, ( See Byron Bell and Nate Chandler as your bookend tackles in 2014) or worse ends up throwing rookies and Undrafted free agents to the wolves out here before they are ready and possibly hindering their long term development.

There just does not seem to be any long term vision here and thats the worst part about all of this.

It's seems like our success is solely dependent on whether dollar store daves vet FA signings are good or bad. 2013 they were great and we were really good. 2014 they sucked ass and we did too until we dumped them all. 2015 they were great and so were we. 2016 they suck and so do we.

Well going by that trend, next year should be our year.

Would really like to hear from Dave, let him tell us how this season isn't a reflection of his business decisions and instead is just about players not doing their job... he would also tell us that there is no need to change the coaching staff, that they are doing a great job.

At first his bup bup moment was hilarious.. but now?? I find him incredibly arrogant.

well said sir.

and honestly, bradberry and worley can very well be the future of Carolina. Obviously they're still a few years away, but if you have to wait 3-4 years for those guys to finally develop, guess what? the core of your team that you have in place right now will be 3-4 years older, and no longer in their prime.

Dave made the biggest mistake not even a rookie GM would make, and that's rely on 2 rookie CB's to hold your entire secondary down, a position that probably takes the longest to develop and transition from college to the pros. I mean Josh Norman is the perfect example. How long did it take coaches to finally have enough confidence to make him the every day starter. You spent years developing him, and the moment he finally balls out, you let him go and draft 2 more rookies? loll just doesn't make sense.

Sometimes I wonder how the Pats have had such sustained success for 15+ years now? I thought the Panthers were on their way to becoming the next Pats, but now I have huge doubts.

Probably because belichick holds people accountable for their suck.. he is not afraid to release more than one player or fire who needs firing.. is it too much to ask for our coach to grow a pair and do his job??

Gettleman is too stubborn and arrogant. He will continue to react too late to a situation because it will look like a knee jerk decision. He will never draft a player that we need only the BPA. And look for bargin mediocre players. He said that's how you have sustained success in the NFL. Fu*cking old ass  philosophy. LOL

Gettleman continues to receive too much of the blame.  We have virtually the same roster on the offensive side of the ball (+Benji!) that was the #1 offense yet now execution is so poor we lead the league in turnovers, and are in the top 3 in penalties.  Blaming one person, whether Gettleman or Shula, is too simplistic but appealing to message board reactionary types, but it's certainly much more complicated than that.

I can't give up yet.  Nothing says we're going to be on top year after year.  This will not be a 8 - 8 or 7 - 9 season.  We may still could win the south.

I wish I could believe that.. not when there are no moves being made to try to right the ship..

    • Smith-Wade for me. He has the path to some decent hefty snaps in Evero’s scheme. He held his own last year and improved as he continued to get snaps— If he makes some strides, could be a very capable nickel.  I agree with Sanders. Bryce had some trust in him that final Falcons game post crazy head-stand.  Bryce looked for him a lot that final game and made some critical catches to get us the W. Seems he’s put in major work so I’m hopeful about him.  Wallace will have an offseason under his belt. I like him a lot, was higher graded than most remember in his draft (I.e Brugler had him LB3/70 overall) but he isn’t as cerebral of an LB as we’re used to. I think he could thrive if we get D captain/film-junky type next to him— because right now that’s Jewell.  Still a bit cautious but love the talent. Rozeboom may snag some playing time from him if he’s still working out the kinks.
    • Didnt Canales already say starters are playing in the pre season? either way extra reps dont hurt but im not one of those people that think playing in the pre season would have saved Bryce from an awful start.
