Buccaneers willing to trade much-needed CB for WR

If mid-season trades are difficult to make happen, inter-division trades are nearly impossible to pull off. Yet, two NFC South teams are holding what the other wants, making this a little more intriguing. According to Jason La Canfora, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are willing to trade one of their cornerbacks.

While the hypothetical deal would mean the Carolina Panthers need to get rid of a wide receiver, that is one of the positions they are currently stacked at.

3-round mock draft has Panthers upgrading major needs

After the departure of cornerback Josh Norman from Carolina this offseason, general manager Dave Gettleman grabbed three corners in the 2016 NFL draft. Only one has really panned out so far in James Bradberry, who has excelled when he sees the field. Sadly, a toe injury has sidelined him for a bit, though he looks like he could be on the path back to the starting lineup.

After Bradberry, things get a little more shaky. The Panthers cut Benè Benwikere during the season in a shocker, putting veteran Robert McClain as a starter on the outside. From there, it has been a game of musical chairs for who sees the field at any given time.

An early look at Panthers' 2017 draft needs

In Alterraun Verner, Carolina would get a veteran in his seventh season. An impressive resume for the Buccaneers and Tennessee Titans, he holds 14 interceptions and 66 passes defended. However, he hasn’t exactly lived up to that resume this season, starting only two games and not doing much on the stat sheet.

Johnthan Banks might be the better option since he is only 27 years old, but much like Verner, his 2016 season hasn’t been impressive. He’s played in five games this season, but hasn’t accounted for a single tackle or pass breakup so far. Yet, in the three seasons prior, Banks has seven interceptions and 16 passes defended, so the potential is certainly there.

In exchange, the Panthers would have to give up a veteran wide receiver. Given Banks’ and Verner’s talent level, it isn’t likely to be Kelvin Benjamin or Devin Funchess that gets put on the trade block. However, Ted Ginn Jr. fits the billing nicely.

The longer Cam Newton takes to throw, the worse he is

At 31 years old, Ginn is hitting the final stretch of his career. With Carolina trying to get younger all around, Ginn isn’t likely to stick with the team much past this season anyway. With the trouble the offense has had in developing longer routes, Ginn’s specialty, the veteran wide receiver has primarily seen time on the field for special teams.

In six games this season, Ginn has only 14 receptions for 191 yards and no touchdowns. His affect on special teams can be great, though. He has 15 kickoff returns for 335 yards and 15 punt returns for 94 yards. In his career, Ginn has managed to return kicks and punts to the endzone seven times, with his longest return going for 102 yards.

Cam Newton's latest comments shows he gets it, could turn season around

It is definitely a stretch, but with both teams desperately trying to get themselves going in the right direction, it might be the type of move that gets made.

So let's trade our only true deep threat WR for a under achieving CB that would be no better then Bradberry or Worley ?

He would be better than Worley for sure and what deep threat your talking about, I haven't seen that Ginn since 2015.

This will give more opportunity for Funchess & Brown while moving to 2 TE set. Please do some homework.

Banks would likely be noticeably better than Worley, and I know that Verner would be. Plus, experience does mean something in this league, contrary to the narrative that some are beginning to believe.

Furthermore, Ginn is not our only "deep threat."

    • No poo tho you might could Jenkins for Legette. They got nothing at WR after the big 2 in Cincy. I don’t think you trade away OL depth. Could get a quality player in cuts. Really that 3-4 end spot what you should be looking for is someone who is stout with long arms and can push back the OL in both the run and pass game for others to make plays…. But we signed Wharton, sometimes I think Evero is a fraud ass nerd who should be an analyst at best.
    • you would honestly probably do Monroe Freeling more of a disservice by putting him in a position where is not yet ready to succeed. .we all knew Monroe Freeling struggled at the NFL combine in drills because of technique related issues & would need time to develop  & now all of a sudden before they even put the pads on Monroe Freeling is somehow a starting LT in the NFL ? if he struggled at the NFL scouting combine what do you actually think is going to happen in a live NFL game at LT ? .even our best LT of all time was not ready to start at LT when he was a rookie & he turned out to be a pretty good darn LT by the name of Jordan Gross ...just saying be patient Young Jedis
    • well i could go on & on but i will just highlight it by saying big difference trust me from the SEC & NFL.it's honestly like comparing apples & oranges especially when you are talking about a  LT. in the NFL you are going up against the most athletic freaks of nature the world has to offer . .the NFL also has much more exotic & complicated defensive schemes than what they are used to seeing at Georgis &  finally but most importantly you have to learn how to master complex bio mechanics where the body kick steps instantly as a reaction to these world class athletes rush without really making a conscious effort it's more of a learned muscle memory  & it can take thousands upon thousands of reps to master rproper technique for a LT in the NFL especially if you are still very raw like Monroe Freeling is    ...just saying
