D-line (2017)

Mario Addison is having himself a very nice season with 6.5 sacks. He's also an UFA who at 29, will surely receive a very nice contract....... from another team.

So we have Charles Johnson, Addison, Kyle Love and K Short as UFA. This was one of the reasons we had to let Josh go but Gman had his work cut out for him this offseason.

I like Addison and think we can resign him and Johnson for "relatively" inexpensive. I have no idea what to do about Short though. Is a combo of Love and Butler that much worse than Short? G-man has some tough decisions to make and will surely have a crowd with torches and pitchforks outside his home no matter what he does.

I think Mario will be resigned, Johnson retires, Horton is released, Paul is cut, we tag short and Love resigns for a 1 year deal.

We go out and sign a fairly big name in the free agency, thinking Devin Taylor from Detroit could be in our price range.  Draft another DE in the 1st.  Myles Garrett is probably out, but Derek Barrett should still be in play and he's a beast.  Made the nation's best OT, Cam Robinson look overrated as hell.

Possible look at the d-line for next year...

DE:  K. Ealy / M. Addison

DT:  S. Lot / K. Love

DT:  K. Short / V. Butler

DE:  D. Taylor / D. Barrett

Webster or Delaire would fight it out for the 5th possible DE spot, if they're still even on the team.

If Mario winds up with 10+ sacks. Not sure how cheap he will be. Even if he is still only a situational player, 10+ sacks is Beasting.

That reminds me of the Brandon Graham situation in Philly. But look how that played out, hopefully he sees more playing time and we resign him to what he wants. If he continues to do well.

Mario has been around for 7 years? Not a bad career. But I am pretty sure he has yet to see a contract that made him say...wow...

I am not saying he will break the bank. But should he continue on this pace, he is going to deserve a raise. And he will have earned it.

But like you said. I hope it is somewhere within his acceptable price range. I would hate to lose him. Every team needs a Mario.

Yeah. Gettleman would never be able to sign Cam or Luke, or Kalil, or anyone in a position of greater importance.

Oh wait...

What about mitchell, munnerlyn  and norman? Also he had no plans to sign hardy either so even if hardy wasn't a head case we would have left the panthers anyway

As far as I'm concerned, Addison and AJ Klein are priority extensions.

As for Short, personally I feel like Butler can be better. I don't want him gone, but he has been mediocre this year and always has been so so against the run. I'm not paying top dollar, and in a dream scenario we would tag and trade him for a 2nd.

I know a lot of members here are sick of drafting defenders but truth is we need d-line help. Johnson is old, Kony has yet to take the leap, and Horton sucks. Plus extending Addison isn't a sure thing. I'm fine with Star/Butler at DT but we need a stud DE as well as Safety help bad. The Super Bowl reaffirmed my belief that defense wins championships. I want to draft DE/S and a RB high, look for OL value late, and finally take care of OT in FA.

    • Hard to interpret some of Brugler's opinions. Capable of running a robust route tree sounds like a lazy thing to say - I'm sure just about every slot TE is capable of running a full route tree... I want to know if he is currently able to (which from tape leads me to a no). Granted, it's pretty common for most receivers/TE not having a full route tree developed before they get drafted. Agility/acceleration after the catch hasn't shown up on his tape (at least his Oregon tape) for those dig/out breaking routes while it has for the seam and slant routes. Agree he has a good physical build and he is very good running seam routes. His build definitely helps him to shield defenders and create a large target point for the QB. Drops were a concern, but it could be focus drops just like T-Mac was/is prone to. Run blocking is an accurate statement, but again, we have only seen him run block in the slot/backfield - inline blocking is a whole different animal. With his athleticism, he definitely has a high ceiling. I just think he also has a low floor and don't like taking that big of a risk on a mid 1st rounder. I think this is a deep TE draft and would much rather target one in the 3rd or later. He's very boom or bust to me - bust in terms of being worth a 1st round pick, not an out of the NFL in a few years type bust. I feel like he gives me Evan Engram vibes. Not saying that Evan Engram was/is a bad NFL player, just that most people would agree he shouldn't have been drafted in the 1st.
    • I mean I would love 6-1. It’s funny the hurricanes usually dominate the first game and win by three or four goals. But keep the second game close. It would be nice if it’s the reverse of that tonight.
    • Brugler has him as TE1 and going to the Ravens in the first.  Apparently Sadiq's football IQ is pretty high (interviewed very well).  Also he was an WR and CB in high school.  This is why I always thought his route running was solid.  I'm sure it needs some polishing but for a TE it's pretty good. nfl.com Built like a bodyguard with a compact, well-defined frame. Capable of running a robust route tree. Gets in and out of breaks with good snap and separation. Vandalizes defensive seams with impunity against man coverage. Survives collisions with catches thanks to his hand strength. Shows off agility and acceleration after the catch. Fits up run blocks with proper positioning and base width. Grips and presses forward with moving feet to stay connected. -Again I don't know if we should take him but if he goes to the right team he could become a scary weapon at the next level.  I just like him as a prospect.
