Ok, so with the BPA theory... Show me your Panthers draft big board (or, in my initial post, the top 30 prospects)

Foster's a hell of a talent - and yeah, BPA and all that - but at some point we've gotta lay off the LBs. I'll probably do a top 40 soon in order to encompass our first two picks, but lately I've just been trying to figure out my top 8 players that fit the cross section of talent, value, and potential impact for us.

Obvious positions of need are OT, DE, and S, but the former isn't likely to be available at 8. DE and S, however, look pretty good. Garrett, Barnett, and Tim Williams are all pass rushers that'd be worth the pick at 8, and of course Adams and Hooker are exceptional Safeties.

Then add to that a couple of top 3 talents in Allen and Fournette, even if they aren't as needed it's hard to pass up on them. That eighth spot can go several different ways:

RB Cook
WR Williams/Davis
TE Howard
OT Robinson/Ramczyk
Etc.

And that's without considering any QBs, we're in a pretty good spot.

Man, anyone with Malik #1 is alright in my book. I have him for us at 8. Part of me is kind of hoping he doesn't blow up at the Combine, so teams would hold off of him. AND Gman still takes him. I don't often tout my State guys, but I am tired of missing out on them.

I wanted to edit all that, and only highlite Malik, but for some reason I can't. Not a big deal, just wanted to explain why I posted your whole post, just to talk about Malik.

He can play with leverage inside. He has power, hands, and quickness. So he can play inside. He also has the speed and motor to play outside. He has good size (6-6, 280), and power, and he never quits.

Yeah, I think he would do well here. Rivera would love his versatility.

I don't like Cook at all for our offense. He needs good run blocking and counters and sweeps. We don't have or use any of that.

Remember how DeAngelo Williams looked like garbage his last couple years with us? Yeah, that'd be Dalvin Cook, but he'd actually be worse in the long run. I only listed him because he does have open field speed and decent hands in the passing game. Some other team will take him way too early.

Sorry I haven't gotten back to the thread before now. But to follow up on some of the comments.

Since it was asked, my next 10 players would be:

31 D'Onta Foreman RB Texas

32 Takkarist McKinley LB UCLA

33 Raekwon McMillan LB Ohio St.

34 Garett Bolles OT Utah

35 Marcus Williams S Utah

36 Cordrea Tankersley CB Clemson

37 Carlos Watkins DT Clemson

38 Budda Baker S Washington

39 Ethan Pocic C LSU

40 Quincy Williams CB Florida

I'm ranking some of these LBs higher for us, as well as looking a Peppers at LB, because of Davis' age AND fears about Luke's noggin. I won't hurt to have another stud come in and learn from those guys while they're with us. Yes, fears about Luke may be a little early, still, but I'd much have Reuben Foster or Zach Cunningham instead of someone like the 3rd or 4th best DE (since it is a deeper position in the draft.)  There isn't going to be the drop off on the DL, S, or RB talent level like there will be on the LB positions this year. The OL waters are murky, so LB could end up being the safest, most guaranteed talent-level position at #8 or even in the second round for us.

TE has a lot of talent this year too. There are 5-10 guys that will be starters in the NFL, and if it weren't for our many needs elsewhere, I would have ranked some of the guys higher. Howard might even be a little too high on my list TBQH.

Oh I forgot to answer about my OL rankings, more specifically Cam Robinson being rated my 3rd tackle...

Robinson is an OKAY run blocker, but struggles a lot against the pass... especially against better DEs. He's stiff at the hips and doesn't protect the edge on a rotating pivot very well, and he can be slow to react.

That said, I do see potential into molding him into a good Tackle in the NFL. I don't know about LT, but he could do well at the RT spot pretty early.

Rod Johnson, to me, just seems like the more complete guy, from a pass and run blocking standpoint. If it wasn't for him primarily, we wouldn't be singing the praises of Dalvin Cook. Not only that, Rod Johnson is just a great name... lol

Ramczyk to me has more potential at LT than Robinson. He's way better in pass protection ability and does well in the run game too.

Both Johnson and Ramczyk are more well rounded and starter-ready to me. Robinson, on the other hand, will take more work, and I'm not taking a guy like that with a top 10 pick. We don't even need to look at OT at #8, really. But if Johnson, Ramczyk, and Robinson all slide to the end of the first or at our pick in the 2nd, then that's what this board is for... to show who I see as better for the Panthers.

the bad part is we have just gotten so painfully behind in terms of our OL.

realistically, we should now be looking to draft and find Kalil's future replacement. But that won't occur until after Kalil retires/isn't here.

Gross has been gone for how long?  and we were suppose to be working on getting a real RT before he left.

Gotta play the hand you're dealt.  They were cap strapped and the league removed the $13+ million and our franchise player in 2014.  Needed a WR too and KB was the best value at 28 as well.  In 2015 even picking in the late 1st they probably would have taken Humphries if Arizona didn't, who, by the way, was an epic bust before moving to LT but the final verdict is still sketchy at best.  And, after Oher represented relative value after last year, it was understandable to think we'd be "ok" to this point without giving up more than we'd get back.

I've still not seen or thought of a "I wish we'd have done this" at LT since Gross retired.

Going forward, if we believe Oher returns, then hope Ramscyk falls to round 2 or pick Davenport in Round 3 to groom and for insurance.

If we don't believe Oher returns, trade for one-Staley from the dumpster fire in Santa Clara being the most likely.

Nothing else we can do.  Teams like the Rams for Greg Robinson, Jaguars for Joeckl, or even Bengals for Ogbuehi among countless others have tried and failed.

I hope we try out any of those guys listed if they get released as well as try someone like Matt Kalil. We need to find an Oher backup/replacement, period. I'd like to draft a couple tackles, especially later in the draft. I think Daryl Williams can be our RT. Norwell, Kalil and Turner are solid. I wouldn't mind drafted a C prospect as well, but it seems like Larsen has been playing well. I don't know if he can be the long term replacement or not. I hope we keep Remmers as a backup. I know the hate for him is strong and he's not a starter, but he's played well enough and can handle multiple positions that I think he's a good backup.

Remmers at the right price is an asset for what he is-a fringe starter and backup with experience.  Never forget he stonewalled Michael loudmouth Bennett in the divisional round.

He played great against JJ Watt as well. Speed rushers (well the awesome ones like Miller) are his downfall, especially when put on an island. Bruce Irvin beat him for a sack, but the ball didn't get out of Newton's hand in 4 seconds.

This was the guy I wanted this off-season at RT: http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/kansas-city-chiefs/mitchell-schwartz-9847/

He stonewalled Miller. Funny thing is that had we signed him, we probably would have kept the tag on Norman as we wouldn't have gotten compensation for him. I think we had faith in the Remmers/Williams duo. Maybe they will be OK, but Schwartz was the guy I really coveted in the off-season.

Yeah that comp 3rd better hit, and this coming from a GMan fan, considering all the sacrifice and criticism it took to get it.
