Mr. Scot

This does bring to mind a thought I had earlier in the month---How did everyone spend so much time bashing Shula when Proehl seems to have been given a pass? Look at Benjamin's play and attitude  issues, the lack of development in that Funchess character, and the disappearance of Philly Brown?  Where was K. Garrett at the end of the season?  What about Byrd--a talented slot WR with the skillset to beat out Brown?

We blamed Shula, and perhaps rightly so, but the OL cards he was dealt + the injuries, an underperforming WR corps, and a regressing QB with poor mechanics---Hard to win with a 29 year old RB that averaged 3.8 yards per carrry and an all-pro TE.

Personally, I wonder what Dorsey is going to say during his annual review.

So funny... I almost posted similar thoughts in the Proehl thread. Love the guy personally, but wonder if he's a better scout than developer of said talent.

As for realistic hires from Mr.Scot's list, I'd be happy with:

DB: Horton, Thurman or Al Harris

WR: Cam Turner

QB: Dennison

Someone asked about Peanut Tillman in the latest "Ask Bryan" (link). Here's the question and response.

Hi, Bryan. With Coach Wilks being promoted to defensive coordinator, will we possibly see Charles Tillman become the secondary coach? Hope you guys have a good offseason. - James in Atlanta

Tillman did a touch of coaching in the form of a consulting role last season, spending a couple of weeks showing the Panthers secondary some tricks of the trade he acquired over 13 NFL seasons. Tillman spent that final year in 2015 with the Panthers but spent his first 12 with the Bears. He signed a ceremonial one-day contract with the Bears upon his retirement and was a commentator for Chicago's FOX affiliate throughout the season.

Tillman doesn't officially have coaching experience but certainly seems to have the acumen - much like he also has for television work. It isn't clear if he has interest or if there is interest coming from the Panthers, who could want to go for more of a veteran coach or perhaps for continuity in the form of current assistant Curtis Fuller. With Ricky Proehl's resignation, the Panthers also looking for their next wide receivers coach. Time, as they say, will tell.

Going back and rereading Strickland's article: one point I came away with.

In discussing the "continuity" option, Strickland mentions Curtis Fuller, but not Richard Rodgers.

Now, reading too much into an article like this is a mistake. And I'd definitely be hesitant to make broad, sweeping conclusions out of a simple paragraph answering a fan question.

Still, it's worth making a mental note of...

I'm not sure I really think this but it could be giving a long shot candidate some practice interview time and brush up on his resume. McDermott received several interviews even he knew were going nowhere but likely helped him land this job.

Another potential DB coach available...maybe.

The Chargers were interviewing DB Coach Ron Milus as an in house option for DC but chose Gus Bradley instead. Unknown if he'll stay on as their DB coach or move on.

If the name sounds familiar, it should. Milus was on John Fox's staff during Fox's last few seasons as Panthers head coach.

Would he want to come back under a new regime? Unknown.

FYI: Milus was once fired by the Broncos for "clashing" with his defensive backs.

    • Just another 1st round QB that never paid off for the team that drafted them or traded for them. It's been like this since the SB began. 36 QBs have now won the SB & only 13 of them have been 1st rounders winning with their original team. Namath 1968, Griese 1972, Bradshaw 1974, McMahon 1985, Simms 1986, Aikman 1992, Elway 1997, Roethlisberger 2005, P.Manning 2006, E.Manning 2007, Rodgers 2010, Flacco 2012, & Mahomes 2019. Only 3 have taken longer than 5 seasons as the starter to win a SB.  4  6  5  4  6  4  15  2  9  4  3  5  2 [the years it takes for these 1st round QBs] 5  1  4  1  3  1  1  2  3  4  [10 of the 36 have won a chip with their 1st team that haven't been drafted in the 1st round. These are the years it took them as a starter] What stands out? Only 2 of these QBs have lost their first championship appearance. Elway took 4 years as a 1st rounder & Hurts took 2 years as a 2nd rounder. Of the 10 non-1st round QBs, 2 are 2nd rounders, 3 are 3rd rounders, 5 are 6th rounders or later. Please stop wasting time on drafting 1st round QBs with such a high failure rate. The remaining 13 QBs are traded or free agent signings. Stafford, Favre, Young, Williams and Dawson are the 5 trades. Peyton Manning & Tom Brady also won for teams as free agents on a short stay as well as being drafted. The lesson here is don't waste your franchise on farming up 1st rounders for the league, and steer clear of trading for a franchise QB. Stick to finding that championship QB by drafting them outside of the 1st round or through free agency.
    • I lost most of the respect I had for Fox in 2010. He should have resigned if he hated the job that much. Instead he stuck for his paycheck and let stuff go to hell.    I burned out on Ron too but my deal breaker issue with him was away from football and after he was gone from the Panthers. He may have been out of his depth but never quit on us.
    • From where they were one year ago to now, pretty incredible. I mean, say what you want about Vrabel he is no Jerrod Mayo.
